DCOA taking aggressive approach to bringing business
(Industrial : Abilene) 7/17/2009

A 20,000-sf Life Sciences Accelerator is on track to be completed by December in Abilene. The Development Corp. of Abilene (DCOA) agreed in February to spend as much as $5.345 million on construction of the Pine St. building.

Now bringing in businesses to fill Abilene's new biotechnology center is the city's next approach.

Abilene and the entire state are among many regions hoping to woo more biotech industry, which brought in $65.2 billion dollars in revenue nationally during 2007, according to an Ernst & Young analysis cited in a 2009 Texas report reviewing the biotech industry.

The board postponed until Aug. 4 a decision on whether to move forward with work to transform 7,450 feet of empty shell space into work-ready labs at the science building.

The work is expected to add roughly $1.2 million to the construction cost.

With federal tax credit allocations, the DCOA has up to about $2 million to fund the buildout or pay for other additions to the Life Sciences Accelerator project.
