What a shame that the people who are supposed to be getting help have to pay even more money to an attorney to get what should be freely done.

I agree in some instances. I had a client who had their mtg with ING and they called once, had the application taken over the phone, emailed the requested information and had it modified in less than a week. 

I've had a client who paid 4500 to a modification company who did absolutely nothing and they lost their money.

I've had clients that tried for a year to get their loan modified themselves from one of the big mtg companies.  And Nothing.

So i agree - it depends on who the bank is - if it is one of the bigger ones like you mentioned - i strongly recommend getting an attorney (not a fly by night loan mod company) but I would always try myself first to one, save the money - or two find out that I really did need the attorney therfore, justifying the cost.
