A number of people have asked how we were able to post our podcasts so quickly to the web while in Spain. It is really easy to explain:
Setup
We used a laptop with a PCMIA card slot (most have them), a videocamera with a firewire connection (many miniDV video cameras have them), windows moviemaker software (which comes with XP), and the startech CB1394 PCMIA Firewire Video Capture Card. We could have just as easily used more advanced video editing software such as Adobe Premiere but "speed to web" was our consideration and not "cool and perfect in editing".
The Capture Card
The capture card can be found on Amazon in the $35 range (http://www.amazon.com/Startech-Card-IEEE-1394-Firewire-Notebook/dp/B0000512GH) but I was patient and bought mine on sale for about $19. The card comes with a connection cable. I was pleasantly surprised that the XP "plug and pray" feature for configuration actually worked with the video capture card. No configuration of the PCMIA card was required on my end (although YMMV).
The Rest
Within minutes of plugging in the card, I was able to capture the video directly into windows moviemaker, do some light editing, add some titles, and render the final AVI movie file. We then converted the AVI file to Flash and uploaded it to our webserver.
