A Whole Different kind of Septic System Sullivan County New Hampshire Part 3, would you like to save a bit of money, on your City or Town sewage system or just maybe you are needing to replace, your private septic system. You may want to think about puting in a Composting Toilet System. This idea really is not all that need, now if your in the age area that I'm in. You sure will remember the ole Outhouses.I'm here to tell you, I sure did use a many of an Outhouse in my younger days.

Good ole Outhouse

Now heres one that sure has seen better days!

I found this one at an old, that I came upon.

Cost of a manufactured composting toilet system vary a lot. Mybe you would like one for your, year round home of two adults and a couple of kids. A system could very will range anywhere from $1,200.00 up to $6000.00. Now if you would want to put one in a cottage, a system designed for seasonal use can range from $750.00 to $1,500.00. A site built system, like a cinder block, double-vault system, are as expensive as the cost of materials, and the labor to construct it. Some other costs include electrical work and the installation labor.

A Whole Different kind of Septic System Sullivan County New Hampshire Part 3, getting a composting toilet system approved. One of major obstacles you could face to install this kind of system, is getting permits. Composting toilets usually require special permits from the City, Town, County, or the State officials. It does varie widely across the Country, when it comes to the ease of obtaining a permit.

A lot of health officers just ain't real familiar with this kind of system. Some of them fear that zero- discharge systems will allow building in previously undevelopable areas. Some States even require you to have a back up conventional wastewater system.

A Whole Different kind of Septic System Sullivan County New Hampshire Part 3 States that are more amenable than others include Massachusetts, Minnesota, Washington, Maine, and New Mexico. Permits are very rarely granted of owner built composting toilet systems, unless they have rigorous monitoring of the system or a maintenance plan.

Also many States require you to get a Certification by the NSF International, essentially the Underwriter's Laboratory of the wastewater system industry.

Dale

I like it! Looks fairly simple and practical ....besides we spend too much time in our standard bathrooms. This system might allow for us to waste less time.

Dale - I agree with Trey. Some of these homes have bathrooms that look reallyl nice, but after the newness wears off it serves the same purpose as a regular bath with a toliet, basin, tub and shower. I can only say one thing for your compose toliet system/it will get the job done but I don't believe many of our younger folks would like it. I would say your post is definitely a thought provoker.

Hi Dale, This post made me giggle.  Especially the illustration of the guy sitting on the toilet. LOL.  I have never heard of a composting toilet system so I learned something new.

Hey Dale, your diagram looks very much like how a Clivus Multrum works.  I was a distributor/installer for them in Upstate NY in the 70's.  Their introduction in this country was the pet project of Abby Rockefeller (daughter of Nelson).  They were very cool---all fiberglass units and could go a long way to saving tremendous amounts of water as well as creating tons of great fertilizer.  Many of the campgrounds in WA State have them.  I still have a bumpersticker on my filing cabinet that says:  "getyourshitogether":)

Howdy there Shirley, and Charles

Its always a pleasure to have you stop by to sit and vist for a bit, and to read and reply back to your comment left here on this post, here at my little ole Blogging Homestead, my friends

Shirley - glad you got a hoot out of it. I ain't real sure it Texas lets folks use this kind of system. There will be two more posts to the series coming up, posting og them will be 48 hours apart of each other.

Charles - now this is a pleasant surprise. It is a version of the Clivus Multrum, but by a different company, the illustration is of one that is made overseas. This is a continuous composting system that produces clean and safe odour free garden compost and liquid fertiliser with out the uses of any water.

Dale - I'll never look at an outhouse the same again.  Is the Sears-Roebuck catalog considered "green" toilet paper...since its being "recycled"?

Good morning Dale - Had to come by and read your new post. I like the photo's of the old time outhouse; we had many like that when I was growing up in Key West. Now I don't know anything about that fancy system you are talking about, I just know about the kind David puts in. I guess I'll have to get schooled up on (outhouses or disposal systems). Ceil

Charles - thats a mighty fine look-en photo, you cam back to leave here. So is NY State your home State?

Kent - one of the outhouse's that we used when I was a kid. Had a King Snake that lived in it, you always wanted to make sure it was not over the door way, before go-en in. Or it just might decide to drop down on ya for the fun of it.

Pat - Why thank you kindly, the newer ones today can be put right in your home.

Ceil - sure glad to have you visit! We also had may of them when I was a kid. Got to do Inspections of some back home. Have not came along one up in these parts as of yet. Not real sure yet if Texas allows them. But I'm going to look in to it.

Carl - your little lady sure enough, did stop by to visit this morning. Glad Ceil likes it.

The first challenge we have with a current approved Short Sale is excavating the concrete that the owner poured over the access hatch!
