BACK IN DECEMBER, MY WIFE'S UNCLE DIED. Uncle Don. Uncle Don was quite a man. At his memorial service, one person after another went to the mic and talked about how "Don was always willing to help a friend or a neighbor."

Story after story of how the Don helped the neighbor fix something, or helped the family member build that treehouse, or how Don impacted their life 20 years ago when they were in Royal Rangers. How Don said this or did that and made a difference in someones life.

LAST WEEKEND, WE TOOK HIS ASHES TO JUNE LAKE, CA. What a beautiful place. Why did they choose June Lake? Well, Don and his buddies used to goto June Lake every year for the "opener". Opening day of trout season. I asked one of Don's buddies, "Is the fishing that good that you would come here every year?"

"NO, THE FISHING AIN'T THAT GOOD. THE RELATIONSHIPS WERE."

If there was on thing that was evident to me on this trip, it was that Don valued relationships with other people. There was just no denying it. This was the smallest of the 3 main gatherings honoring Don's life, but it was also the most intimate. This is where the people closest to him really got to let it out and share how this man's life had affected them.

EVEN IN DEATH, DON WAS CHALLENGING PEOPLE TO BE MORE SELFLESS, MORE WILLING TO LEND A HAND, MORE FOCUSED ON OTHER PEOPLE. I hope when I die, I leave such a legacy. I hope my death is a call to integrity, righteousness, honesty, and love. As I fight the battle that every man fights, learning to really be intimate with those close to him, I will remember the way Don treated other people. I will remember the way his friends and family thought of him after he left. I will remember June Lake.

How touching - we should all be so lucky to have an Uncle Don in our lives - past or present they are certainly what makes this world such a great place.  I am sure he is missed - but the memories will live on forever.  Just goes to show that taking the high road, being nice and helping when and where you can does touch people. thanks for sharing

Thesa, thanks for stopping by. Just thought you'd want to know, Uncle Don referred to Oregon as "God's Country."

John... I can so relate. When I die, my ashes will be sprinkled in the creek on our land in West Virginia. They will be cast into the water and the surrounding land at a place we call "Flat Rocks." It's a place I love more than any on Earth. :)

Jeff, I bet flat rocks is great. I actually just looked at a couple of properties in WV. Sometimes I just goto realestateshows.com and then enter a number, watch that show, go up one number, watch that show, and so on. I have seen some real gems.

It was really a great experience. I had never spread anyones ashes before. (I come from an italian family, long wakes, lots of food) We weren't really supposed to be doing it, so I didn't put up those pics, but it was very surreal. Very powerful for me. An emotion really has to be powerful for me to feel it, and this was. Great healing time for me. I think it affected most of the people there in some powerful way.

Also, I have no doubt you would have liked Uncle Don. He was the absolute epitome of "down-to-earth".

It's nice to have people remember all of the good things that you've done.  Sounds like your uncle was a fine man and friend.  We should all be a bit more like him.  Sorry for you loss.

I never met your Uncle Don, but I know exactly how he is.  Because I see the same qualities in you and your family.  You serve his legacy well and I know that you and your family will continue to honor his name for generations to come.

God Bless Uncle Don.
