Have you ever spent a period of time where you were so wrapped up in home and family issues, trying to make a living, just moving ahead day to day, forgetting to take a look around the world on the outside?

For the past year, that's what I've been doing.  I have a teenager at home (‘nuff said), working on my Real Estate business, making a change to ZipRealty, paying bills, making the day to day decisions on my narrow treadmill of life.  As of yesterday, it had been nearly a year since I had gone down to the Edmonds Waterfront to take a walk.  I live within 2.5 miles from the Waterfront, it's not a convenient walk unless I happen to be doing the "power walk" thing with my hypothyroid afflicted (fat) black Labrador retriever to the dog beach, but it's definitely a short drive down there.  Not only had I not been down there for a walk in all that time, I never even really thought about it.

For some reason the other day, I decided to lift my head and take a sniff and look at the outer world to reconnect with the wonderful community in which I live.  I nudged my husband off the couch after dinner and suggested a walk on the beach.

We drove the short distance down to the Marina Beach Park just to the north of the dog beach, piddled around in the sand for a while, took pictures of the setting sun, listened to the calm, relaxing waves roll onto the shore.  Then we headed up the walkway behind the setup for the Waterfront Festival all the way down to the Underwater Park.

Along the way, we came upon and greeted other locals and tourists alike enjoying the same experience; all seeming so relaxed and glad to be there.  I think something about the salt air and the sound of the waves just puts you in a good mood and makes you friendlier.

We passed behind Anthony's Homeport and Arnie's Restaurant - always interesting to see things from the "other side."  We looked in the windows of a shop that's been down at the waterfront for years, but has changed it merchandise to some amazing art and glasswork made from Mt. St. Helen's ash.  We took the time to read all of the information signs telling about the underwater life in the sound -  Moon Snails, Red Octopi, Geoduck Clams, etc.  We watched the video about the Sound provided by the Edmonds Home School Resource Center and got excited over the computerized time and weather stations provided by the Edmonds Rotary Club.

All this took about an hour and a nice leisurely pace.  We arrived home thoroughly relaxed, happy and pleased with ourselves for having chosen such an amazing and beautiful place to live.

What about you?  Stuck in that rut?  I know that Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz said "if I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any further
than my own backyard," but sometimes we might want to consider that our backyard extends much farther than we ever realized and offers us endless
opportunities to stretch out and enjoy life.
