What Were the Philadelphia Eagles Thinking in Signing Michael Vick ?

I know this topic is not related to real estate, but it is such a sensitive topic for both myself and the City ofLife or Football ? Philadelphia, I felt compelled to write this.  I am still in shock as are many folks about this decision from the Eagles Management to sign Micheal Vick.  I was on Facebook that night when it was announced and saw the stream of posts of many folks indicating they were not going to support the Eagles this year, selling their season tickets, or were just in disgust and shock.  Many of the people at the preseason game left when it was announced that night.

What was the management thinking ?  Did they not learn anything from the media circus show with Terrell Owens ?  If that was a circus show, I can only imagine what this will be.  More importantly though and the heart of this post is "WHY"?  .  Why sign this guy ?  His actions were horrid and despicable.  There are consequences to those actions.  From a morality view, what kind of message does this send to the children in Philadelphia and all of society ?  That you can live the violent, criminal life, go to jail and become a felon and still come out and make $1.6 million your first year and then over $5 million the second ?

"Everyone deserves a second chance" is the broken record rationalization chant to support Vick.  I agree with second chances.  But you know what ?  He has a second chance... he is out of jail !!!  He has his whole life to grow and build his character.  Sometimes though you do not get that second chance in a particular career.  So maybe this post should have been "What was the NFL thinking ? " .  Is it so much about money and selling tickets and number 7 jerseys that they reinstated him ?  Pete Rose is still banned from baseball and his crime was victimless.   What about doctors, stockbrokers, realtors, lawyers who screw up and lose their license ?  Chances are they can never come back to the industry.  So with the crimes that this felon has committed, why did the NFL reinstate him in the first place ?  Will the NFL become the next rehabilitation clinic ?

Winning !  Is it all about winning for the Eagles ?  If so, how come they did not keep Terrell Owens ?  Yes, he was a major distraction, but he was not a felon or a murderer or God's creatures.  Is Michael Vick so fantastic that you must sign him in the pursuit of winning ?  Does Andy Reid really want another project ?  Not to be harsh, but even his sons have had a number of chances and are in and out of the legal system for their own issues with drugs and the law.  Would the Eagles sign his sons to a management position ?

Will you forget about the dogs ?

The Eagles management really lowered the bar on this one and sent a horrible message to our youth.  Our City is already going through enough turmoil as it is.  Why not just pass ?  Let some other team deal with it.  And so close to his criminal ways in Virgina ?  The best team may have been on the West Coast away from where he committed his crimes.  Or in reality, the best team would have been in Europe.  There are plenty of second chances there.

My wife Stephanie has already decided to not watch the Eagles at all this year.  It will be interesting to see if other commentors and the media are right in that "over time, they will forget about the dogs".

I know I will not forget.  Will you ?

I think that Mr. Vick could eventually redeem himself by working tirelessly with causes that support the humane treatment of animals. I guess that it is possible that he learned his lesson ....

But you can have him, I'm glad he won't be playing for the Falcons anymore!

Vick is not the first, nor will he be that last, gifted person that gets to comeback into sports. While it may be trite, he did complete his sentence and does deserve to go back and do what he does best. I do not condone his actions, and, like Richard above, am glad that he is not with the Falcons. Personally, I don't think he is the one to lead them to a SuperBowl, much less the national championship.

I couldn't have said this better myself. Being an avid Eagles fan all of my life and growing up where it was pounded in my head to hate the Cowboys, I would rather root for the Cowboys than the Eagles. I cannot believe that he is on our team. I was so disgusted when he was caught doing this and now that he is on my home team, I am just appalled. It makes me sick. I will not support the Eagles until he is off the team, I will not watch, and I am going to Pat's burn your jersey party she is planning. This picture says it all:

Roy - Am not as much concerned about the team spirit, but more concered about the spirit of the City of Philadelphia and the message this sends to our community and society as well.

Cindy - Agreed.  In many other industries, there are background checks and the like.  If a doctor commits a crime, chances are that doc will have a hard time getting back into his industry.  I find it hard to believe that the NFL decided to reinstate Vick.

Richard - I hear you.  Although I am not sure he can redeem himself in the eyes of animal lovers.  Would a child molestor come back and contribute to society by working with children or be part of a support group of parents with abused kids ?  I think there would be outrage.  Although I do think he can redeem himself as a man and rebuild his character.  Am just not sure that that process should be done through the NFL.

Mike - I hear you.  Although the point of the blog was not so much as is the Vick the right qb for the Eagles to go to the super bowl but more so what was the NFL thinking as far as reinstated him and why the Eagles would want to mess with the spirt and vibe of the City of Philadelphia.

I agree. It's sending the wrong message to our youth that as long as you're famous and/or talented, you can get away with a crime and just go back to life as normal. Thanks for the post.

Chris - Even down here in Texas it's the talk of the town.  Of course, my friends all asked me what I think about my city.  Philadelphia has never shyed away from controversary with players (T.O. and Iverson being two recent examples and they're not even close in terms of what they've done).  I think it will be an interesting season in terms of the public's reaction.  I really don't think much of the guy and am not really a football fan, so I barely know Vick other than his reputation.

Christopher & Stephanie, I hear them talking about this and I believe it's a mistake.  I know people deserve a second chance but honestly what he did was horrendous.  Maybe they should have showed a bit of that....

Everyone who is against the signing of michael vick should be ashamed of themselves.  Why no give the guy a second chance. How about putting ourselves in his situation? what would we want society to do if that was us? Chris and Steph are prominent figures in the RE industry and lets just say you two are convicted of some heinous crime against the philadelphia area residents who trusted in you to provide them with the service of purchasing a home. We find out that the two of you have been embezzling and inappropriately preying on the ones who trusted you? what if we decided not to give  you a second chance in doing the thing you love, selling homes. Although his has nothing to do with taking the life of an animal, but the act has been done and its now time to move on. How about the housands  of woman (young and old) who proceed to abortion clinics to abort their fetuses? These individuals get a second chance at having unprotected sex and continuing with their lifestyles. Why are we not crucifying them? I am not proud of what he did but he has paid his dues therefore give the man a chance to live a better life.

To JDJ, It is Mike Vick who should be ashamed of himself.  How can you even begin to compare what he did to embezzling? One has nothing to do with the other.  He let helpless animals be ripped apart for profit and would still be doing it today had he not been caught.  A leopard doesn't change his spots and to think he is a "changed" man just because of some jail time is ludicrous.  He doesn't deserve to be in the NFL and should find some other line of work.  As far as your abortion comments are concerned that is a personal choice whereas these dogs never had a choice, but he did and what he did is unconsciounable.  I gather you are a male from your comments and God help us all if we win the Super Bowl for that's all most men seem to care about.

Its funny how you quote dogs had no choice in the vick situation but what about a fetus? Just as the dogs never requested to be in the situation a fetus also never requested to be placed in tha situation. unconscionable? So killing an unborn is not? embezzling is not? Taking a human life is not? My point wasn't to place emblezzement to what he did but the point was both actions are wrong. If we can forgive one then we can forgive another. Super Bowl or no super bowl the point is we need to be fair in making judgement. If Michael vick doesn't deserve a second chance then we need to be as strict with everyone else who have made themselves a law unto themselves. A leopard doesn't change its stripes is understandable but there are issues of character and issues of wrong decisions. Stripes of a leopard is something external, whereas Vick is dealing with making the wrong decisions.

I'm absolutely grossed out by the photo of the dog. I'm not sure if I would have lunch now.

I dont really know how I feel about this whole situation. A big part of me wants to work on mercy and compassion and a part of me wants to move on.

JDJ not quite sure how we jumped from dog fighting to abortion in your example, as you make a presumption that 1) a fetus is equal to a dog and/or 2) we all believe that abortion is wrong, so I don't quite follow your logic.  Regardless, I think the point they made in their blog post was that Vick did get his second chance - his freedom - he was released from prison.  Not everyone who is released from prison has the same opportunity to work in the same field as they did prior to incarceration.  That doesn't mean that they aren't getting their "second chance."

I frankly do not think Michael Vick spent enough time in prision.  He served his sentence and is entitled to a second chance.  HOWEVER that does not mean he should be allowed to participate in professional sports. Let him start his life over like any other convicted felon.

How many employers want a convicted felon back?  He was welcomed back like nothing ever happened.

I do not know any other sports figures who commited a felony and redeemed themselves in professional sports again.  I know careers that have been ruined by less like Palmero and he was not convicted of anything.  Again like Pete Rose a victimless crime.

I too will never forget what a barbarian he was.  The clips of his interview I saw did not appear genuine.  They seemed staged.

Perhaps some would like to read what Pope John Paul II said about animals in a clarification of our relationship with them.

The connection is "life" whether it is the life of a dog or a human. Funny thing is I don't see an uproar being made over the killing of the 26 year old young man at the Phillies stadium several weeks ago. Where are our priorities? I guess because he is an athlete he should know better and he deserves more scrutiny. I applaud the Eagles for giving him a second chance. I bet  all of you will be quite okay with Donte Stallworth being reinstated next year after he killed a man while driving under the influence. The point is whether you agree or not agree with abortion as a society we pick and choose what we consider to be a faux pas, barbaric, inhumane as long as it benefits us in one way or another. My point if you are misunderstanding me is that everyone deserves a second chance and if we are going to crucify MVick we need to crucify murderers in general, whether they have killed cats, dogs, babies, fetuses, old folks, young folks. MVick is fortunate that he plays football but I would stand up for giving anyone else a second chance no matter what. I am not happy with what he did either so don't misunderstand me, but I think we should lay off and give the guy the benefit of doubt that this was a mistake.
