Technology. We love it at times and we hate it other times. It works for us and against us. The pro technology people, of which I consider myself, try to convey to others how it saves time, money and eases the way in which we do business. The "Old School" people will tell you that we are moving too quickly and that "back in the day", things were easier, less hectic. We had more time with our families.

Let's talk about cell phones. As Realtors, we really can't live without them. I called an agent this morning and she answered her phone. I told her what I was calling about and she asked if she could call me back as she was at a doctor's appointment. Granted, she may have been in the waiting room but I did think, why are you answering your phone if you can't speak? The ideal situation would be to have 2 voicemail messages. Switch to number 2 which says I am on an appointment and will call you back once I am done.

The flip side of this issue are those who are not available at all by phone. They are either too busy or too unwilling to answer your phone. "I return calls from 2:10-2:20pm daily." I know, many time management seminars have said that this is the way for you to best manage your time but in the real world, it makes you seem uninterested and too busy to speak with anyone!

It would be nice to find a happy medium. Personally, I never shut off my phone. There are those rare cases when the phone rings at 1:30am or 7:00 am but as a whole, my customers and agents know that they will get me or a return call shortly after calling.

We are never too connected. However, many of us spend too much time on unproductive activities including excessive social networking that is unrelated to our business goals.

Roy, do you think this is generational? I do agree that some spend time on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc... and say that they are building their network. They never seem to make the jump to link Business with the social side. It is almost as if they have been given a free pass to be on these sites during the business day. Others, have done a great job by posting open houses, mortgage info, etc.

I believe we are too connected if you are talking about phone calls.  I wonder why the agent at the doctors office answered her phone.   Or whether it was something about what you said about what you were calling about ...

"I told her what I was calling about"

That made whomever she was with at the moment... (other waiting patients, a nurse, a doctor, a sick child) someone she could not answer what you were calling about...  I mean if it was a question like "is the house available (not sure if that is a legit call in your market) vs. if you were asking "what will the seller take?" it might be different.

Can you do that with your phone?  You said:

"The ideal situation would be to have 2 voicemail messages. Switch to number 2 which says I am on an appointment and will call you back once I am done."

More importantly can I?   If I send you my phone manual will you set it up for me?  Hey a nice message in Jim Hirshhorn's voice saying "Maureen is entirely too busy to answer the phone right now " might be just the ticket.  Or on my Google Voice?

Clearly Maureen, You will have to scale back your blogging by, let's say 20%? This way, you will have time to stop and smell the roses! I often think, what if you need to take a sick day? Is the next day back crazy busy cathing up with all of the blogs? You seem to be everywhere at all times. I sometimes try and hide a blog on a small unknown blog site with no readership and yet, you find it! :)

Ok, back to the topic. Your comments remind me of when you call someone and they ask who's calling. When they find out you are not a bill collector, they reveal that it is indeed them you are speaking with.

All cell phones should have the capability of adding a 2nd greeting. Send the manual. I have a professional microphone and recording setup. I will record your script at no charge. Bloggers courtesy discount!
