Are we an industry begging for a makeover?

Services for Real Estate Pros

I recently read a blog with some very unsavory comments and generalizations about Realtors. The commentator stated that, "Most Realtors are not prepared and have not faced the reality that markets go up and down. He stated that Realtors are essentially limited service providers, they are lead generation machines, and they don't know real estate well." Well lets just say we can generalize on all different types of professions.

Sure we may have had some people join our association in the last few years that didn't have to work very hard to get a sale but everyone has to start some where and I am sure that if they plan to stay in this business they will adjust.

On Activerain I have been really impressed with the information and knowledge I can find to assist me in my business and although I have been a Realtor for 9 years and an Auctioneer for much less I have had to make adjustments also. People that live off of commissions and work with the general public in up markets and down markets deserve to be commended. This is not an easy way to make a living. If it were everybody would be doing it. You have to love this business and have a lot of commitment to continually grow.

Is our industry begging for a makeover? As the market is constantly changing so are we. As technology changes so do we. As Seller and Buyer needs change, we adjust to service those needs. Realtors are constantly making over their business it's the only to stay in business.

It irks me anytime anyone makes generalizations about any profession. In the big picture there are bad apples within any industry, but it is silly to label all of them as being a certain way. Thanks for the good post Endea.

You are right. Generalizations are never good. I know realtors who know tons about houses, others who do not. Unfortunately, the same could be said for some inspectors.

I agree with Jacob!  People make generalizations about realtors, loan officers, staggers and appraisers all the time.  Mainly negative comments how we are in it for the money and/or do not work hard enough for the money we make.  Some are great, others are not.  Great Post!

For my money, our business is so over-run with folks that really should not be in this business, the criticism we get is pretty well deserved. The up and down markets do tend to help flush out the bowl at the downturns, but these folks seem to be in endless supply. I was first licensed back in 1988. We have always been a much maligned profession and I suspect that will continue. All I can do is work to make sure my clients see me as the exception to what they believe about my business.

Great Post..... what does not change will die. Real Estate sales have gone through many changes over the years and will continue to evolve. There will be those who try to fight change, however they will be the ones left behind. All industries got through similar situations. You need only look at when personal computers became popular. There were 100 year old door-to-door encyclopedia sales companies that refused to change and embrace the new cd rom encylopedia and pioneer the new technology adding video, sound and more to there companies product line, believing that there tried and true formula for success would always work. Those companies went out of business because they refused to accept change. Our industry will survive, some agents will not.

You are right Brad, our industry will survive and some agents will not especially those that don't do what it takes.
