DEQ hearing draws more than 200 attend Harsens Island meeting  The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has until Aug. 9 to make a decision about a permit request to build a bridge from mainland Clay Township to Harsens Island. Officials from the DEQ listened to comments from area residents at a public hearing last week. The Detroit International Bridge Co. wants to build a 1,950-foot drawbridge from a site off Pointe Tremble Road in Clay Township to a property on the island adjacent to a marina and a house east of the Champion's Auto Ferry landing. * This rate will be increased to $6.00 per vehicle effective Jan. 1, 2005

Hi! I'm not sure about that place but sounds like a great place to live and about the bridge construction..I guess it's a sign of development and works best for the people around that area since it will most likely generate more livelyhood which means INCOME and when there's income, it will generate growth and sucess for Michigan island! In most cases what you say is correct. BUT sometimes growth is not so good. This is an island and the beauty of the island is it is not polluted, corrupt, or infested with crime. This is because of the limited access. People on the island are divided 50/50 some want the bridge so they are not stranded by ice jams in the winter. Others do not want the bridge because that is the ambiance of the island. (Being stranded sometimes). We will see.
