I like living in Crescent City, CA. Why, you might ask?
COMMUNITY TOUR
I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, which had it's advantages. I went to pro sporting events, the Day On The Green Concerts by Bill Graham, shopped 'til I dropped, and had many, many restaurant choices.
There are no pro sporting events in Del Norte County, but the Del Norte Warriors football team, who went to 3rd round North Coast Section 2A League this year, has a packed stadium for every game.
We do not have major artists and large concerts here, but we have an excellent group of local actors, the Lighthouse Repertory Theatre, involved in local theater presentations and DNACA, that does an excellent job of sponsoring talented musicians from around the Country to perform in our little town.
Shopping 'til I drop was fun when I was a teenager, but now I just want to get the clothes I need and get out. Thank God for the Internet as I do most of my shopping there and have it delivered to my door. Crescent City is 20 minutes South of the Oregon border (no sales tax). My husband and I like to take a day trip to Grants Pass or Medford once a month or so and eat at his favorite restaurant, Black Bear Diner, and shop at the mall. I find this is more than adequate to meet my shopping needs.
As far as restaurants go, we probably could use more, but we have several I enjoy very much and that meet my needs.
Some of the other advantages to living in Del Norte County and a small community:
- People watch out for your kids- I had a co-worker leave me an anonymous note tha
t my 16 year old son, who was supposed to be going to the doctor, was in my van with about 10 other boys, with the sliding door opened, spinning donuts in the Pacific Market parking lot. There are loads of other examples, but you get the point. - Everywhere you go, you see someone you know- I could go weeks when I lived in the Bay Area and never run into someone I knew. In Del Norte County, there are less than 30,000 people in the entire county and if you're involved in anything at all, you will see people you know. That gives me a feeling of community, comfort and belonging.
- Crescent City and Del Norte County are full of beauty - Our harbor, beaches, National and States Parks are burgeoning with places to explore. My husband and I canoe on the Smith River then go lay on Kellogg Beach in the summertime and it's not unusual for us to be alone the entire time. We've witnessed thousands of geese and butterflies flying overhead, pelicans fishing the ocean, deer, elk, and other wildlife as well. We also enjoy walking when the wild rhododendrons and azaleas are in bloom and checking out the many different types of mushrooms you will see in our county. Some are quite spectacular.
