You hear the term less often now, but years back the area of Holly Street down by the train station was called Old Town. In his advertising, a businessman named Lou Parberry, always called himself the "mayor" of Old Town. It was a fictional title, but people remember that today. It seems like yesterday, but many years ago, Bellingham turned an area of Old Town into one of the cities most spectacular parks. TWaterfron Park is on Whatcom Creek and it is great for walking, looking at the water, looking at the falls, fishing (seasonally) or viewing the fish rearing operation. During the school year, school children have this as one of their main field trips. The area is particularly interesting in the cold of winter, when the salmon go back up the creek. Sometimes you can see them, by the dozens, fighting their way up the falls. It is amazing that they can do so, as the water is coming down the falls so fast that time of year. Somehow it seems like there ought to be an easier way for the salmon, but not being Mother Nature, I guess I should not be speculating. Hope you enjoy the photos.
