One of the parks that is in Bellingham, and would probably not immediately come to mind, is Memorial Park. It is in the Sunnyland neighborhood, right behind Sunnyland Elementary School (where I went to school for one week in the 1950's before they redistricted me elsewhere.) This park is at King streets and East Maryland. It is a very pretty park, the only negative I was aware of was the freeway noise, as it borders on the freeway at the east side. This park goes back to WWI, when it was put in to commemorate the local war dead from "The Great War." Since that time, they have added memorials for all US wars. I had a rather odd experience. While looking at the WWII memorial, I remembered clear back to my childhood. There was a lady in the neighborhood, who's son had perished during a bombing raid of Nazi Germany in the second world war. I remembered her last name, and sure enough, there was her son: Edgar Slentz. I guess this is my little tribute to that long ago memory. Sometimes it is funny how all the memories and pieces from a lifetime of living in one location can suddenly fit together in a nostalgic or meaningful moment. This park had a major restoration project take place in 2005 and it looks great.

What a lovely article Steven. You are very fortunate to have lived in one place for many years. You have a sense of history and belonging that can only come with time. What a wonderful thing that you were able to locate the grave of your neighbor's son. She is probably long since gone, too and will never know that you paid homage to this brave soldier. But, what a nice thing to do. You did it bcause you're one of the good guys. Keep the articles on your wonderful town coming. I so enjoy reading them and seeing your great photos of one of the most beautiful places on earth.
