Hello Andrew: Maine sounds a lot like here. Life is simpler, no crime, low house costs and only 3 stop lights in the entire county.

This is because you have conservative values in Maine. It is common sense to avoid speculation and not so credit worthy borrowers.

Less money, better use of money. Lots of money flowing...careless drunken sailor spending happens. If it's your own money, you are conservative. If it it Uncle Sams and you did not put much in for taxes, spend it...what the heck, not out anything.
