I am barely old enough to remember when a handshake was as good as gold and a man's Life is not just a big monopoly game...!word was his bond...!!!

Ever since that quality of virtue was evident to me, it has been eroding to the point that you really can't trust even when a person puts something in writing and swears to it under oath anymore.

A sad state of affairs!

What caused this shift...???

Was it a general disrespect for morality, a failure to see the merits of telling the truth, or Was 'The Mulligan' part of the erosion of honesty...?the fact that there seemed to be no penalty for lying or misrepresentation...?

Certainly, there has been a general lack of pride in preserving 'the family name'...

As our society reached the heights of pluralism and tossed away ethnic culture in the attempt to become the 'melting pot' we were all taught in grade school history class, the plot thickened...

I'm of a mind, however, that nothing is ever totally lost. If we will to, we can go back and pick up the pieces and resurrect our culture...It is possible to restore the values and virtues Or is money really the 'root' of all evil...!by which our parents and grandparents raised us...!

But it takes courage, a firm purpose, and a willingness to 'not follow the crowd'...

If you raise your children to be honest, to keep their word, to live a virtuous life, they may be counter-cultural, but they and you will be espousing what Joshua said in the old testament...

"...As for me and my house, we will serve The Lord..."

Good morning Sir.  Always nice to read a good post like yours.  May I add something to what you wrote?  "Teach them MY ways, and in their old age they will return to me"  Don't remember where that is, but it's in the GOOD BOOK.

Fran

I learned a long time ago that a man is only as good as his word. It seems to be a lost virtue these days but I think you can always tell the sincere ones and know the ones that are not.

I think it's the rap music.

Crosby, Stills & Nash said it best, "Teach Your Children Well."  - 'Remember that one?

Fran: When did it shift? A great question! What is so sad though, is that it'll never get back to those days when a man's word was as good as gold. I wish I could believe otherwise, but I honestly can't.   So we better stay close to the/Our Lord.

Hi Fran,

How true....I consider my greatest achievement and the one that has brought me the most overwhelming happiness was the day I realized that my 3 sons had all grown to become honest, caring, fine young men who always go out of their way to help others or lend a caring ear....

There are people who's word is still reliable and are who they make themselves out to be...in fact, I may be naive, but I believe the majority of people are good. Unfortunately, it's the ones who aren't so good that cause the most damage and that we hear about the most...

Jo,

I heartily agree with both paragraphs...!!! There IS a silent majority, and for the most part, they are decent people...!!! Thanks,   Fran

What a great post, Fran. I wish every person in this world could see this. I'll be re-blogging to "get the word out." Excellent thoughts!

One would only have to watch an hour of TV anytime of day to see where our morals and virtues have gone. Just flick through the TV guide channel.

It is a shame how honesty, honor and character have been forgotten, but all the more reason to pray, be an example and praise parents and young people for not forgetting the important lessons in life.

I still think the handshake is important and your word is all you have. I sold my KISS pinball machine for far less than I could because a person said he wanted it and I said then it is yours at this price. I got 4 other offers for a higher price, but because I already said he could have it for that price, I honored that price.
