I have read that identity theft is up 30% this year over last year and that the main reason is our date of birth being listed on social networks like Facebook, MySpace, etc.
Why not adopt a fake online birthday? Maybe your mom's birthday month and day and whatever year you want to use. What business do some of these sites have to need your true birth date? I have been asked for mine lots of times when I register for something when I don't really think it is relevant.
Of course, it goes without saying that you absolutely give the correct date to any legitimate source who needs it (like government, doctor's office, hospital, your spouse! etc.)

This is a great tip-it is a shame we have to worry about identity theft. Thanks for sharing.
haha- I had a friend who made fun of me when they saw the birthday I had posted. I agree that there is no reason to post too much personal info. I am also Very careful about any information about my kids.
Jon, would you believe I use the year of birth of one of my sons? he he
Pat and Nicholas, you are welcome! Stay safe.
Amy, I agree about the kids and being careful, even though I have some photos out there. I usually just put their first initial when writing something about them. I figure those who care, know the full name.
I was born 10/2/69 and will be forty this year and am darn proud of it ;) People don't believe me still, haha!
I have a friend who uses a fake name when she orders take-out over the phone. So when she goes to pick up the order, the guy thinks she is "Mary." I think it's a smart tactic, as she lives in a busy urban area. Fake birthdate - choose your own!
