It probably looked cute to adults, and it has good colors, but a small child looking at something unfamiliar will look for familiar references: 2 eyes, a nose and mouth in the normal and usual places. If they can't decipher what they are seeing, it is frightening. That's why many children are afraid of clowns, with their exaggerated features and strange expressions. This statue is difficult for a small child to process.
Hey, Kim - After looking at it and watching this little boy, I was almost crying, and the more I look at that picture, the more I almost cry.
Hey, Diane - I think it's a wacky fish, but it could also be a wacky bird.
Hey, Joshua - I think you're on to something.
Hey, Al & Peggy - I can kind of see a bird there, as well as a fish, but there are too many pointy things and big colored things for comfort.
Hey, Susan - You sound like a child psychologist. Of course, sometimes I think I'm a child psychologist working with some of these people in real estate....
Hey, Irene - I think this belongs downtown along the Harbor with all the public art for the grown-up public.
Hey, Shoshana - Totally agree with you.
Hey, Christine - I think I would have been scare of it if I saw it when I was young.
Hey, Dan - I think there are a lot of things designed by people that never have to use them or look at thme.
Hey, Robin - I'm having to laugh at your comment since it's true.
Hey, Marchel - I don't have children but even I know that this is not right for a children's playground.
Hey, Jim - You know there was a nice commission paycheck for this thing. I'd be willing to bet that no children voted on it - LOL.

14 Comments on Foto Friday: Who dreams up these things for children?
Doesn't exactly give ya the warm and fuzzy feeling does it?
I don't blame the child for crying. I would!
Want the heck is that thing???? I would have probably cried tooo.... Someone actually paid for that!!!
A kin of Albert Hofmann perhaps?
Wow Jim! It was kinda scary at first and then we saw a little birdie,....but for little kids? Nah.

That's a bit sad. Sometimes adults just forget to look at things from a kids perspective.
That's pretty scaring looking... not something I'd put around a child! That kid was obviously acting perfectly naturally.
Wow, I could definitely see my kids being upset by this, especially at a younger age.
Who ever came up with that must not have kids and never had to get them back to sleep after a nightmare!!!
Hi, Jim:
At least the colors are not all primary colors. That's something I could never understand. Little kids only see garish red, blue, yellow, and green?
Cheers,
Robin
Jim, That is not even cute as a matter of fact it is kind of scary!! I can't imagine anyone choosing this for a children's playground either.
That is just plain ugly! I bet the "artist" however collected a fat commission for doing that.
Even as an adult, it makes me want to cry.

I just pointed to that thing and cried! It's like Tim Burton dabbles in playground design.
