Tomball Cougar Art Sculputure

The above oak tree was a causality of Hurricane Ike.  It is on Baker Street in Tomball which I travel often.  I watched the artist sculpting the tree from my car as I traveled back and forth on Baker Street.  I figured the cougars had something to do with the cougar being the mascot of Tomball High School.


I found a youtube video that our local Tomball Potpourri News made that explains it all. The artist who carved the tree is Master Wood Carver Nathan Smith, a local Tomball artist.  He carved two cougars in a rocky cliff setting out of this fallen oak tree.  Yes, the cougars are in recognition of The Tomball Cougars.

Hi Marchel, One of the nice surprises in life is some of the astounding treasues that other leave behind for us and others to wonder about. I hope we all have something to leave behind that will be as interesting as this tree sculture is. Pretty darn cool.

Marchel- that tree is beautiful.  I so appreciate the eye of an artist.  I believe we get to have that adopted eye as bloggers.  Expression in all forms is so beautiful, real and true.

JOAN, Isn't it amazing what you can do with a chain saw!!

WILLIAM, I think it is pretty darn cool also!  Did you watch the video of him sculpting it?  I drove by a number of times while he was working on it.

REBECCA, My daughter has that artist eye and it is such a gift but you are right it can be in the eye of the beholder.

CAROLE, I'm with you!!  I can follow a pattern but to just do something like this from scratch is beyond my comprehension.

JUDY, I don't remember this particular tree but there are bunches like it in Tomball and I'm sure it was beautiful!  I'm glad to see that they preserved the beauty of it!!

MARY, We still see the ravages of Hurricane Ike around here almost a year later.  It is nice to see something of beauty come out of what could have been just a dead tree stump.

GEORGE, It is now something of beauty that can be enjoyed by all.

SYLVIA, The cats do look ready to pounce.  There's a gecko on the backside.  Someday I will have to do a post of the back of the cougar tree.

TREY, Wouldn't that be way cool to have in your yard!  I think it would be way cool to have the big tree also though.

SALLY, It does look like they could jump at you.  My sister just spotted a bobcat on her property in Colorado.  I'm thinking I don't want to come face to face with the real thing.

JOHN, I think it is very cool also.  I love the detail.  I will put the back side of the tree in another post.  It has a gecko on it.

I love the tree. It's so much nicer than cutting the tree down, or just lopping it off at knee level. I've seen some trees that have become birdhouse posts, and that's kind of fun.

CHRISTINE, It is a visible reminder of who is in charge.  It is not us!!

BILL, It did take quite a while as I drove by several times when he was working on it.

RUSSELL, I love Tomball.  I live very close and do a lot of marketing in Tomball.  The people are just so friendly!!

KAREN, This does bring beauty out of destruction.  When I was down at Galveston this summer they were doing similar things with the palm trees.

MONIQUE, I can follow a pattern but to do something like that from scratch is beyond my comprehension.

Well, not that high. With our weather, trees snap off at all sorts of levels. And I've seen folks just top the darn thing with a birdhouse. Looks very out of place!
