Here is a friendly rundown of how to make your own podcast.

1) Gather the necessary supplies: 1 Computer, 1 Computer Microphone, 1 set of head phones.

2) Download and install audio editing software such as Audacity for PC, or Garageband for Mac.

3) Find some podcast safe music for bumper intro and outtro music, and background sounds.

4) Write a script (yes you need one)

5) Open up the audio editing software and set the input to microphone, also set the input to "monitor"

6) Read, convey, and rant the information from your script, edit out and add in to your hearts content using cut and paste.

7) Get an account at a podcast hosting service, such as libsyn, or podomatic.

8) Upload your first podcast.

9) Spread the RSS feed to all the podcast search services like iPodder.

10) Buy an MP3 player and learn to automatically download your podcast with an aggregator.

Good stuff Rory> I guess once I get the hang of this WebLogging I will move on to podcasting. Hopefull with all this technology to keep me busy I will still find time to sell a house every now and then. Are Virtual Reality Biz cards next? Lay it on the coffee table and watch your Realtor pop up.

Good post.  One question, though.  Where does one find podcast-safe music?  I assume you are referring to copyright infringement issues.  Are there sites you can get/pay for copyright-free music?

Best guess for that would be to google royalty free music, or some variation of keywords.  Great post too, by the way.

It's one more thing that I just haven't had time to launch.  However, you make it sound easy enough (concrete steps take the mystery out of it) that I'll likely begin this within a week.

Thanks for the helpful guide (and with the compliments of expert, Mary McKnight, to boot!!). I have listened to a number of podcasts but have yet to branch out myself. Sounds easy enough - guess I just need to dive in. :)

Nice HowTo...Just what I needed since I'm a bit of a cheapskate.  Almost purchased the RealPro Podcast Service, but can't bring myself to since I like to write and am already recording scripts for my IVR system...Great post....

Hi Rory... I just wanted to let you know that I included a link to this post in my 3rd edition of "ActiveRain - The Early Days".  Your insights were always appreciated... I hope you'll consider posting to AR again.
