Active Rain points detailThe points thing.  It's addictive.  It's what keeps us engaged when (as has happened to me this past week) other pressures of life take us away from "the Rain."

Unique among social media outlets, the Active Rain Real Estate Network rewards its members for interacting with each other by awarding points for various actions.

GREEN ARROW

You're already familiar with points awarded for (1) commenting on another's blog, and (2) posting a Blog Entry.

But how does a newbie gain additional points?  Active Rain has been working on this, and this past week you may have noticed something new.

BLUE ARROW

You get points for logging in each day.  100 points!  "Why?" you may have wondered.  There are many members of Active Rain who joined, were very active for a period of time, and have disappeared.  But there they have remained, inactive Rainers with high visibility.

Whoever thought up the "points for logging in" is a genius.  It gives you--the active newbie--a chance to pass the "deadwood" and be recognized for your active participation!

RED ARROW

This isn't new, but you should know that when you write something exceptional enough that someone else reblogs it, you are rewarded, both in terms of points and (more importantly,) with additional Google juice!

YELLOW ARROW

Are you being spammed from time to time?  Before you delete that comment, report it by clicking "report a concern" before clicking "delete."  Not only will you help the AR community, you'll be rewarded with points for your good deed.

Blog on!

LOL, deadwood.  It's a shame when you go down some areas in my state, those people are long gone.  Some will be missed, others ... well ..... see ya!  Good tutorial for the newbies and us 'golden oldies' too.

Hi Mike,

Maybe you can help me.  I have the same problem as David Zimmerman above. I have my photo on my profile, but it does not show up when I comment.  What am I doing wrong?

Thank you!

How can you tell if you're still a 'newbie' or not?  Or does everybody get 100 points whenever they log in now?

I love active rain. I don't log in daily because it never fails I find a useful tip to work on and there I go playing in the rain while all less lays abandoned. I will try logging in daily and restricting the play time. Hey anything for points!  I must get to blogging daily, I'm tired of reading all the success stories and waiting for my starting point.

Mike,

I like how you clearly explained the point system for newbies.   I did not know we get points for reporting spams.   Thank you for the info.  It will help many of us, not just newbies.

Congrats on getting over 100 comments with this great post!

I was wondering why my photo didn't show up in comments also, after some searching I think I found the answer, upon reaching 10,000 points the photo is automatically included.

I just noticed the "points for logging in" thing yesterday, Mike.  I knew if I searched the term "points for logging in" I'd find an explanation.  Thanks.  That's really cool!

Thanks for the info.  Usually I log in only when it's required so I can read a blog.  I'll try to log in everyday :).

Thanks for the information.  I am an avid AR blog reader, yet tend to not login if not necessary.  That has now changed.

Mike, as probably the newest "newbie" on the block, I'm trying to soak up everything that will be helpful in doing just what ActiveRain is about--growing my business! Thanks for the information. I sure would like to rank a bit higher than my starting point without waiting as long as it took me to sign up......I don't know why it took me so long to sign on, but I think I'm addicted already.

I'm no exactly a newbie but this post was really informative to me anyway. I didn't know we could actually get points by reporting spammers. Who would have thought?!

Hi Mike:  I didn't know about the points for reporting spam.  For the newbies, an example or two of spam would be helpful.  Even for me who is not so new.  I'm thinking, if someone leaves a comment but they are advertising their own business, is that what should be reported?  I've either elected to just delete the comment or leave it and move on.

Thanks for the info. I figured out right away I was getting points for logging in, but didn't know about reporting spam. Logging in frequently also will give newer people like myself a chance to pass by the ones who signed up early but have stalled out and haven't been active in a long time. Being licensed in a small state, it will be easier for me to jump up in position on those who are not active and I am seeing results of that already.

Mike - Points aside ... catching up aside ... even passing the deadwood kuddos to the back room boys for finding an easy way of increaing web traffic counts.

"Ah the wisdom of the AR boys in the back room that's almost 160,000 hits per day if we all log in every day. a great way to boost traffic"
