Foreclosed Homes and the Legacy of a Family

By
Managing Real Estate Broker with Flexit Realty "Flexible Home Selling Solutions"

I have noticed during the process of showing foreclosed homes the remnants of what is left behind.

Many of the mortgage companies have a "clean out service" and they haul aways the former owners belongingsbelongings left behind, if they have not been removed within the time frame.

Some of the others mortgage companies just leave the belongings where they were when the former owner departed.Packing up

It is a sad testiment to how the business of forclosure is handled.  Most...not all families would appreciate the time to gather their possessions.  Others will take advantage of the system.  I guess that is how we got here in the first place...people taking advantage.

The other day I walked into a mortgage company to discuss a foreclosure issue with a lender.  I couldn'tno guns allowed poster help noticing the white lettered warning on the door....No Fire Arms Allowed!

I kind of laughed to myself until I realized it was no laughing matter.  The emotions and rage people feel when losing their home could cause them to bring a gun into a lending institution.  In fact it has already happened or that warning would not be on the door.

Here is some thoughts that you may not know.  Click this link and see how many homeowners are estimated to be or going to be underwater or upside down on their mortgages.  http://www.businessinsider.com/henry-blodget-half-of-us-homeowners-underwater-by-2011-2009-8

The stark reality of our times.

Gary,

I think the lender is well within their right to take a home back if the owner quits paying.  They homeowner also has the right to be treated with respect and dignity.  Unfortunately there are cases when neither owner or lender act properly.

Gary, one of my first responsibilities as a new agent, some years ago, was to assist a troubled couple  on the verge of catastrophic financial ruin. Their relationship ended tragically in divorce and the ex-husband forced the home into foreclosure. He destroyed, both, his and the credit of his ex-wife. They lost everything and had been happily married for twenty years. They are now both in terrible physical condtion, he's dying, and she had once been a beautiful model and spokesperson.  Their anger towards each other, horrific substance and psychological abuse, and inability to communicate with buyers and cooperating agents took a terrible toll on the process and on their lives. To see fine people lose everything like that and not be able to do anything about it is sad beyond comprehension. My heart was stricken because of their loss. I know how a doctor feels when he loses a patient.

I clicked through to that article and it was worth the few seconds to do so.  Frightening projection!  Fortunately, I don't have a lot of experience with that here, as the D.C. area is one of the few to be doing relatively well in this market - still falling, but not catastrophically.

Gary,

I think some people get violent just for the heck of it.  It is smart to handle these situations with care.

Hi Brian, no doubt the mortgage contract spells out the loan requirements.  A lender can opt to immediately foreclose or work out an option to help the homeowner stay in the home, if possible.  I also agree many do not act responsible on either side.  Thanks for the comments Brian.

Hi David, it takes time to realize we can not help every client, that is not to say we don't care....but this is a business.  Our business as professionals is the help clients in the real estate process of buying and selling homes.  It is difficult not to become emotionally involve when you learn and know so much about clients.  Doctors are taught the cycle of life.  We as realtors need to learn the cycle of clients.  Thanks for the comments David.
