Mold and Efflorescence

There is sometimes confusion over what is mold and what is efflorescence. Efflorescence are mineral deposits that come through masonry such as brick, stone, and cement. The deposits are bought to the surface of the masonry because of water infiltration into the brick or cement and then subsequent evaporation. Often the powdery substance has a mold like appearance. Efflorescence is not mold and should not be confused with mold. Efflorescence has a power like appearance where mold does not. Efflorescence forms on inorganic material such as cement where molds grow in most cases on organic containing materials. Mold can not grow on an untreated block wall, there is no food source for the organism. Eefflorescence is almost always white in color while mold can take on a variety of different colors. Hi John~ Well, you taught me something I didn't know today.  I did not realize there was a difference.

Hi John. I found this really interesting and want to clarify. You meant to say "Efflorescence has a powder like appearance where mold does not." instead of "Efflorescence has a power like appearance where mold does not." Right?

Untreated block wall is an interesting phrase. Treated can simply be ordinary paint. The paint becomes the food for the mold.

Yes you are right Ron, I think that is very interesting. I have seen mold using paint and drylock type sealers as a food source. Mold needs mositure and a food source to grow. I have seen more and more mold issues in basements these days. Mold is very difficult to deal with becasue there are no guidelines for what unsafe levels of mold are in a home. In my oppinion all homes are going to have some mold. Thanks. Http://www.LookSmartHomeInspections.com

But, as with any product repeated and continued wetness can cause mold to occur in the powdery deposits.  Additionally, if you have efflorescence on a basement wall and place sheet rock over the wall, mold can form on the sheet rock and make a big mess for you to attempt to control.
