Are we the reason there are so many Realtors?

I love my job.. I love the Real Estate industry and spend so much time learning how to do my job better.  I enjoy a generous amount of success and love to talk freely about my craft with my clients.. Here's the problem though, I often get inquiries about how someone can get their start in Real Estate.

I can't be the only one here, we all get these types of questions.

I believe the public has to hear from us the hardside of our profession. The money invested in branding, rejection, prospecting, weekends, late nites, deals that fall apart, lack of health insurance, tax burdens and so on..

I don't have a problem with more people get into real estate, I do have a problem when I enter into a deal with a ill-prepared, unprofessional agent sitting across the table..

How well do you you prepare friends and clients when they choose to follow your footsteps?

John,

I'm involved in a program working with young women (ages 12-16) and during "career day," my husband and I usually volunteer to talk about our careers to the young women.

The first time I prepared for this presentation, I began to list the benefits of being a Realtor. Then I started on the list of drawbacks. After I looked at the two lists, I had to really wonder what the heck I was doing, as my list of drawbacks was much LONGER than my list of benefits. Yet, I love my job!

And, I had a transaction a few years ago with a MUCH younger Realtor who actually text-messaged me to ask if I could hold his Buyer's earnest money check. I wondered, "which class did he miss?"  I've actually mentored this younger Realtor (from another Brokerage) just because I like him.

So, in answer to your question, I am brutally honest about the pros and cons. When I went into real estate in 2003, they warned us to have six-months salary set aside to get you started. I tell people now to have at least one year set aside and to take the lower commission split in order to get proper training from an established brokerage.

The beneifts of this job to me are PERSONAL, but not always financially rewarding.

Great post - thanks for writing about this.
