Moose Monday - Valentine's Day Moose in Red Lodge

This the fourth installment of Moose Monday and I had to dig this one from the winter files. Before you get too much of chilling effect seeing snow in August, let me assure you that the following photo was taken on February 14, 2009. It was taken by my friend Marisa of Southern California in one of her many visits to Red Lodge in 2009. She first visited Red Lodge in 2008 and like most visitors who discover Red Lodge, once you visit Red Lodge, you will likely come back again and again. Her parents liked it so much they actually moved to the area and I helped them purchase their Montana home (it came with a lot more land than they were used to in California!).

I've never seen a moose in the wild. Our biggest wild creatures are deer. Are there a lot of moose running around loose?

And all we get in NJ are too darn many Deer! and the occasional black bear dumping the garbage!

What a beautiful picture looks like there is plenty of snow to enjoy. Seems like a place I would like to visit one day.

No. You don't see the above scene often. They most likely like to stay in the forested area. We do see lots of deer in and around town trhoughout the year.

We get that and a lot more here in Red Lodge! :)

I am sure you will enjoy it better in person. I do hope you will get to visit Red Lodge some day and the neaby Yellowstone National Park.

What amazing creatures! I'm surprised at how little snow there is for Feburary. Is that common?

I have not spend too many winters in Red Lodge to say yes or no. I know we get far less snow here than in Montreal, Canada where I grew up. In Red Lodge, it may snow in town in the morning and then it can get sunny at noon and most of the snow will melt by the afternoon. We get lots of day of snow in the winter but no major snow accumulations unless you are in the higher elevations.

These particular moose don't seem to be very tall. Another ActiveRain member recently posted a photo of a tall moose (about 8 feet tall if I recall). Are they heading towards the blue recyling bin?

Of course, I don't get to enjoy moose, deer or other similar wildlife walking down the streets of Toronto. But we did have our Mel Moose in the late 1990's or early 2000's in Toronto. Were you in Toronto at that time?

It looks like they are headed to the blue recycling bin in the photo but I think they decided to check out some of the neighbors backyards instead.

Oh, I sure remember the colorful Mel moose in Toronto! They seemed to be at every busy corner in downtown Toronto and some of them had interesting paintings on them. I took photos of many of them too with a film camera back then. I also remember the restaurant The Loose Moose and their famous tiny chocolate moose dessert where you can eat the entire dessert with two spoonfuls. :)

Hi Gerry, I have commented before that we have moose everywhere - still they elude me. My daughter and grandson went camping near Red Feather Lakes at Lost Lake last weekend - YEP! THEY saw a moose! a huge moose! I'm so jealous :-(

I love this photo of the moose just mosying through the town - reminds me of Northern Exposure!

Wow, you have been able to maintain the Moose Mondays with regularity and fresh material, that is pretty cool! The best I would be able to produce is a sad little Fox Friday, ( with my backyard resident fox, who is quite elusive!). Until you started your posts, I never really thought about there being so many moose in Montana, only Alaska, and a couple I have seen in Colorado...

Gerry - Some of the companies that bought the Mel moose still have them on display on their properties.

I remember those moose desserts at the Loose Moose. They were fantastic. I haven't been there in years but it still exists.

I see that you write in American English rather than Canadian English. Did you always write in American English or did you switch after you moved down south? For certain words, I tend to use American spelling when writing to Americans (e.g. cheque vs. check) but generally use Canadian spelling for other words (i.e. the "our" vs "or" series - colour/color, honour/honor, labour/labor etc.). I see that ActiveRain's spellchecker still doesn't handle Canadian spellings even though I told them a while ago.

Just thought of a great posting series to compete with you. :)

Mel Moose!!!!

Coming whenever I can find some (I think most of the 5,000 moose are probably not in public view) but I bet a lot of them are on the internet already.
