What's Under Your Bed?

Cool name for a scary movie, but I'm talking about using the space underneath your bed for storage, especially when you are selling your house.

Prospective buyers will be looking in closets and the cabinets that come with the house. You need to cut your clothing closets in half to really give a good visual of how much space they have. Out of season clothes can be put in storage bins in the basement or attic, but what about all those extra light jackets, sundresses that may see the sun once all summer and those shorts the hubby won't wear because his legs look like sticks.

I suggest you take advantage of the space under your beds. There are so many different items on the market now from Space Bags to boxes, for storing anything under your bed.

Hi Wendy ~ I've been using this tip myself as my own home is on the market. I feel a little weird though telling my son to put stuff under his bed when for the past 19 years I would tell him to clean the stuff out from under his bed!

Hi Kate ~ Luckily, all four bedrooms in my house have dust ruffles and hide the view under the bed. It's been a big help to me!

I thought you were asking a personal question, and I didn't want to tell you. LOL

I always make these types of suggestions to my sellers also. I kind of joke that if a buyer is looking under the bed then they are just being nosy. Helps break tension sometimes.

Kathy- I've used the vacuum-seal bags from BB&B to store throw pillows under my bed in my guest bedroom. Unfortunately, I have a high 4 poster and the only thing you might see under my bed is dust! Great ideas!

Great photos! After attending a great Feng Shui class, I came home and immediately removed storage from under my bed. His message was the chi does not flow with storage under the bed. '

However, this is a storage option, along with boxing everything up and placing it in a storage locker. The more the seller can get out of their house before listing it the better.

I do take advantage, because I have a tall bed. I use the rubbermaid totes with wheels that are meant for under the bed. The problems is I forget about them.

LOL, Donna! This is what I've told my family, too, under the bed and drawers - let's utilize them!

Hi Kathy ~ I was going to get those vacuum seal bags myself, for comforters and extra pillows, but so far I'm doing okay without them. Most of it is stuff that I will need to get my hands on at some point.

Hi Sharon ~ Oddly enough I have never used the space under the bed for storage until now {while my house is on the market}. As I say to Kathy above, I am going to need to get to this stuff, so temporarily I hope my chi will understand. : )

Cindy ~ LOL! I've tried to keep things from that particular room under that particular bed, but I know that come Fall I'm going to be searching under every bed for what I'm looking for.

Great tips, Kathy! We recently did an occupied Staging where one of the daughters had SO many show boxes under her bed that she had forgotten she had most of them - the other half were just empty boxes.

Thanks, Connie ~ Usually when you have kids you're telling them not to put stuff under their beds! I got rid of several empty shoe boxes that were on closet shelves. I usually hold onto them because they are sturdy enough to store things in, but they were taking up valuable real estate in the closet so off to the recycling box they went.

There is nothing except carpet under my bed. My Roomba gets under there at least once a week to keep the dust bunnies away

I use this tip for my 13 year old son. When I would ask him to pick his room he'll take everything!, including dirty and clean clothes, candy wrappers, bedding you name it he will hide under the bed. Sometimes even in between the mattress and box spring...So I decided to get him the storage plastic tubs for under the bed and even designated one for trash (just in case), I still find things in between the mattress though!. But, the room is cleaner. I tell the story to my clients, they laugh and implement the tip and thank me for it...

Hi Cynthia ~ Normally there is nothing unde rmy beds either, but it has become a valued storage space while my house is on the market.

Thanks for commenting Kristin! I know that I needed a place to put some things that needed to come out of closets, but not be far away, or stored, from the bedrooms. Utilizing the space under the bed has really helped out.

Yvonne ~ I guess he still needs to keep that little bit of control by putting stuff between the mattress! : ) It sounds like, for the most part, this works for him {and probably would work for most kids and teens}.
