It's amazing how technology grows and expands by leaps and bounds.  It's also amazing how new things come along and I miss the boat and don't get the new stuff.  And we are all such creatures of habit.  I am a true believer in the slogan "if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it".  So, here at home, we have had a hard wired network and hard wired router for the last few years.  It worked fine.  Our Internet speed (thanks to Cox Cable) has been great.  So no complaints.......  But, sitting at my wired desktop till 10pm each night has gotten weary.

Linksys Wireless RouterI had always thought I would have to call the cable company or the geek squad to get wireless Internet up and running. I assumed it was a big expense and new hardware...yada yada..... I don't have time to worry about getting it done.  But, I was wrong.  This weekend, I asked a question at BEST BUY and they told my all I needed was this small blue cardboard box called a wireless router.  It was on sale!

But I was still skeptical.

But, this morning, I did as instructed by the BEST BUY dude ...... "read and follow the instructions". He said that was important.

I did just that....read the instructions and in less than 15 minutes (following the excellent instructions via CD from the blue cardboard box)...... I now have wireless Internet in the house.

It's 8:30pm and I am sitting on my couch in my living room- typing this blog post on my lap top.   No wires, no mess, and it is awesome.   This new wireless will put a STOP to spending  my entire evenings in my "home office".   Right now, I am just sitting on my couch, with my "LAP TOP" on my lap....while watching the TV!  This is a new luxury at this household.

I know (I hear some of you snickering)......I am way behind the learning curve, but this is great and I am happy with this wireless luxury.  And, I will be able to sit on my front porch, or out on my back deck and still be able to be "online".   Yep, a new and better way to feed my addiction.

Now my son is jealous.....he says he will save his money and he wants a laptop too.

Thank you LINKSYS by Cisco....I am ONE happy new customer!

Hi Christine~ Well, I have wireless but only because of my router that is upstairs.  What exactly did yo buy to make yours wireless?  With it do you still have to have cable for access?

Vickie:

I currently have cable service bundle pack (TV,Internet and Phone), and a wired router to my desktop.  All I had to do was buy this wireless router and install it on my desktop.  That provides wireless access to any other piece of equipment (such as my lap top, my son's Wii, and it allowed me to network the printer too.  I can sit here on my couch, write a letter and have it print at the huge printer in my office with a click.  No more save the document and print it later.  This router only cost $ 54.00.

Hi Christine ~ I can so relate to the "if it isn't broken" mindset - I'm the exact same way and don't have wireless (and truth be told I'm a little spooked by the idea of adding any more "rays" / radiation or whatever it is to my house so that stopped me too).  Really happy to hear that it was relatively painless. I've sometimes thought that it would be nice to blog from bed.  Someday....

Christine - Don't you just love technology? It's so nice to have wireless where you can go throughout the your home and still be on the Internet.

Christine - I too have a wireless network and love it.  My old laptop just died that used a wireless card.  My husband just bough a new laptop and joy, joy....no more card.  Just plugged it in, found the connection to our wireless router and bingo....we were surfing the internet in less than 5 minutes.  Ya gotta love technology!! :)

Hi Chris, the newer wireless home networks have really put the kibash on the need for Cat-5 wiring throughout the house!  One recommendation if you are living in a neighborhood is to have a security code set up  -- a code that prevents un-welcome computers to gobble up your bandwidth.  Good luck!  John

Christine, welcome to the world of blogging in bed. Yes I said that. Me and my little lap top are up early and go to bed late. No more sitting at my desk downstairs. Now I can multi-task, watching TV.

I use to want a bigger office, now I want a bigger bedroom !!

Hi Christine,

Welcome to the world of working from the couch!  :)  I LOVE my wireless and my "office" is the couch, with the dog beside me.  :)  The only thing I don't like about wireless is how it "hiccups" sometimes.....for instance, for some reason accessing the MLS doesn't always work w/the wireless though I can bring the site up when I "plug in" to the Internet.  Not sure why that is....but for the most part, it's grand.

Looking forward to meeting you in person someday soon!  Have a great day!

All best,

Coleen :)

Christine -

Have you gotten your wireless printer yet?  It just adds to the convenice - although I admit to hiring a young teckie in the neighborhood!
