The rankings take into account the crime rate, quality of school system, expansive green spaces, number of children in the area, family events and artistic and recreational activites.

The article cites First Landing State Park, Back Bay Wildlife Refuge, the Virginia Aquarium and I-Max Theater and 35 miles of beaches as qualifying factors for Virginia Beach making the list.

Virginia Beach made the top 10 list from a pool of over 2000 communities in the United States.
