Physical Media Is Going Away: Online Content Is Here To Stay.

Last week,  the American hip hop group known as "Black Eyed Peas: made history by holding Billboard's number one slot for 20 consecutive weeks. This has never been done before by any musical artist.

The article published on CDInsight.com reads: "Between two hits singles off their most recent album, The E.N.D., this marks the first time in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 that any artist has held on to Number One for that many weeks in succession. The first single, "Boom Boom Pow," held the spot for 12 (http://cdinsight.com/news.php?readmore=2011)

Further into the article, we learn just how many digital downloads consumers purchased of the Black Eyed Peas' music during these 20 weeks: "Combined, the [two] singles have sold about 5.8 million digital tracks, while "Boom Boom Pow" pulled in a digital 3.8 million alone."

But how many physical discs did they sell during this time? Answer: Less than a million. Only about one-tenth of their total sales during these 20 weeks came from physical media purchases. This means that about 90% of the Black Eyed Peas' paychecks originated online. If 90% of your business is trying to find you through the Internet (and they are), ask yourself: "Am I making things easy or difficult for them?" Trust us: your competition already knows about this. And they are planning-right now-to steal your business.

Face it: we're not headed into a digital era-we're already in it. Online content is king, and pop culture isn't the only source of evidence either. Take a close look at CRM (customer relationship management) software: online platforms like Salesforce.com, along with their "no software" slogan, are taking over with cloud computing-meaning that all application data resides in cyberspace, and the application controlling the data resides online as well. Users are no longer forced to sit behind a specific computer containing the CRM software; instead, they merely need an Internet connection-even a 3G cell phone will do-and they'll enjoy instant access to their customer management systems from anywhere at anytime-all the time. Oh yeah, and there's no time-consuming installation required, which leaves you more space on your computer for your stuff.

Yard signs, paper flyers, and digital media discs simply aren't enough anymore. Your marketing efforts need to dominate the Internet as well if you want to (1) remain competitive; (2) reach more customers; and (3) be in business next year. If you're not saturating cyberspace with your campaigns, you could easily lose to those who are.

When the "Los Angeles Times" quit printing their Saturday Real Estate section (a favorite read for many), the writing was on the wall.  I recently uploaded a listing video to YouTube, using my inexpensive Flip video camera, and within hours had real inquiries and leads.  All for a few mere pennies (cost of camera spread out over time).

It sure looks like an online presence is the way to go.  Print media is too static, and outdated almost as soon as it is printed.  I am all for this new technology.

Agreed, yet people still respond to print when done correctly (and integrated with online options) such as a video tour
