I met him once at a party, Senator Ted Kennedy, that is.  In hyannisPort.  It was a party for him in the 1980's to mark his 25the year anniversary in the Senate. I was invited by someone who had been actually invited to the party . .   in a way.

I was 19, 20 maybe.  I had heard about the party the week before and decided it would be fun to go.  I had been down to Hyannis many weekends and had friends there, but no one who knew the Kennedys.  Still, I figured that I was sure to meet someone that weekend who had been invited. At the time, I was attending college and working part time as a legal secretary. I flew out of my law office in Salem that Friday afternoon, my suitcases already in the car and began the two hour drive.  I checked into that little motel on Main street and hurried over to Harry's Bar and Grill.  The Kennedy's went there sometimes, I had been told, though never when I was around for the weekends. Still,I was friends with the owners of Harry's, Eddie and Dana, and the town was overflowing for the party.  I was certain to meet some invited guest, some male in need of a date for the party.

After an evening of investigation and flirting, I finally met someone going to the party . . . the caterer.  He liked me a lot and agreed to take me.  We had it all planned.  I would go in his catering truck and then disappear into the crowd and be a guest.  It worked. I sat with a group of people and explained that my date was late.  I was so excited to go to the party, to the "compound."  There was a large large tent set up with bars on all sides. A buffet filled with shrimp and lobster, etc. And lots of people and an orchestra and then a "roast."  I had a great time.  After the roast, I spied him standing talking to some people and I went up to him and said, "Hi, Ted." he turned away from his friends and looked at me, squinting at me, trying to recognize me, but, of course he didn't know me.  Then he held out his hand.  I did likewise.  He didn't shake it, simply held it a moment and smiled into my eyes.  Later in the evening, his daughter, Kara, passed me and said "Nice dress."  I had only taken hours to prepare.  For that 20 year old young woman, it was a thrilling evening.  I wish now that I had been older, more mature, for this party, as I would have conversed with him more, discussed issues, life, philosophy.  But, then again, had I been older, more mature, I probably wouldn't have crashed the party in the first place.  There were no camera phones then, so I have no photos to mark that occasion, just the ones in mind.

So, thank you, Caterer.  I don't remember your name.  You were too busy cleaning up to drive me back to the motel.  I hitched a ride with some other guests and drove home the next day and never saw you again.  But, thank you.

And, rest in peace, sweet Prince, from Fort Myers Beach, Florida

Karen:

Thanks for sharing the story.  It made him more human. to the rest of us.  I woke up this morning and turned on the TV to such sad news.  I knew it would be soon when he couldn't attend his own sister's funeral.  What a loss for our country.

Karen -

Senator Kennedy was no saint!

But he overcame personal adversity, and offered a respected record of public service.  With his passing, even his many detractors honor him.

And this is such an accomplishment in this day and age!

So long, Teddy!  Glad you got to meet him - however briefly.  He had an impact!

What a nice memory.

I agree with Pat, like him or not, agree with his views or not, The man had conviction. I'm not a liberal not am I a Democrat; I am, however, someone that can appreciate the pressures and expectations he bore by just being a Kenndy. I also believe that given all the personal tragedies he endured throughout his lifetime, his dedication to making others' lives better was, and is, a philosophy we should all adopt.

Your passion and devotion to serving others will be missed, Teddy.

That was a good story and, I am sure, a nice memory to have.

I am here in Kennedy country.  He was our senator, and a very hard-working one. He will be missed.

I went to college in Washington DC in 1966. It was my previlege to be a employee of the US Senate my first two years there. My job was to go on the Senate floor and tell the Senator that a press person wanted to talk to them in the press room. It was my honor to say I had talked to both Senators Robert Kennedy and Ted Kennedy, and say that I shook there hand. I was an 18 year old kid that looked 15. I will always remember that Ted Kennedy remembered my first name and called me Joe. One time there was a press person he didn't want to see. He smiled at me and said, Joe, does it look like I'm really here? I said no Senator, I can't see a thing. You always remember kindness, especially when you're just a college nobody, and many Senators treated you that way. Not Ted Kennedy. I can still see him smiling.

Karen,

What a wonderful story about Senator Kennedy...may his mighty"Roar live on."

It is a day to mourn but also celebrate his life, as is Irish tradition.

I also wrote a blog in tribute to him and I was truly amazed by the commentary

I received.  So I found your post and the comments a heartwarming "read."

Thank you,

Karen - What a memory. The only time I had the nerve to go near the "compound" was in a car. We drove, (okay - my friend drove) right up the street and turned around in the driveway next door. There were a whole bunch of people in the yard watching us.

Ted was the commencement speaker at my college graduation. That is the closest I ever came to meeting him and I live in MA.

Oh wait, I forgot... I also went to Maria & Arnold's wedding so to speak. I was right across the street from the church in a crushing crowd. Wormed my way through all of the people and right to the front. I saw the whole Kennedy clan, including their honored guests. Wish I knew where those pictures went.

Memories....

Hi Karen ~ Thanks so much for sharing this - I love reading and hearing people's memories of Teddy Kennedy and this one brings back memories for me - if not of the Kennedys - of what we dared to do when we were younger and wilder. I am so so sad that he's gone and really don't think we'll see someone of his stature in public service any time soon. What an amazing man.

Laura - I will read your blog tribute to him.

Joe - Good story yourself.

Regardless of his politics and personal history, its always nice to share the good things/memories about people, well known nor not.

You're right, more "mature" and you'd have certainly missed out.  You mention no camera phones.  Was there an official photographer?  If so, maybe you could find the archive shots and ID yourself!

Hi Karen,  I am new to Activerain so this might be a duplicate.

After reading your blog, I thought to myself...you were one bold and courageous young girl at the time.  You definitely filled a portion of your canvas of life w/ something very interesting.

Karen, Thank you for sharing your memory.  I also met Senator Kennedy on one occasion, which was one of the highlights of my life.  Perhaps I'll write a blog about it.  But, it was so long ago that I am not sure I could capture the magic of it in words.

My mom had an opportunity to meet Senator Kennedy a number of years ago (perhaps 10).  She was struck by how much better looking he was in person than he appeared to be on TV.  Thanks for sharing your memories.

Josie,

I don't know how courageous it is for a young woman to crash a party, but I suppose it took a little guts and determination.  And, yes, as an artist, I have come to realize how important it is to fill your canvas with a variety of life experiences so that the convas with be filled with colorful images.

Best Regards,

Karen Nichols
