A big welcome to anyone coming to New Orleans for Southern Decadence 2009. I'm knocking on wood, hoping the the only hurricanes we'll have to worry about come from Pat O'Brien's! For GLBT businesses this if bigger than Mardi Gras, and this year looks bigger than ever based on the word we're getting from folks in the hospitality industry.

I was in the French Quarter today, and saw lots of preparation going on at and around the "lavender line." It's grown over the years from a 3 day weekend to a full week of insanity! Some places like Rawhide 2010 are kicking things off on Wednesday, the 2nd.

As with all these huge events, we often get new folks who fall in love with the city, so of course I'll be on hand for those looking for 2nd homes or even for those who decide to move here. So welcome again, and thanks for continuing to support New Orleans.

Hi Troy! I'll just miss Southern Decadence. My husband and I will be in town this weekend to celebrate our first Wedding Anniversary...

Any recommendations? I'm definitely wanting to visit Pat O'Briens for a hurricane or two!

Ashley, this weekend will be a little slower than usual, but still fun and hopefully not to hot! Here's some suggestions for your weekend:

1. Cafe du Monde - this is a place both tourists and locals have in common. Cafe au lait and beniets anytime 24 hours per day. Whenever you want it, it's there.

2. Orleans Grapervine, on Orleans St. just behind St. Louis Cathedral. A great place to have a special meal. The restaurant is small, the menu is small, but the wine list is big and the food perfection. It's nice but nowehre near formal. Very comfortable and not yet overun with tourists!

3. Get out of the Quarter! There's so much more of our city to see. Get a tour of the Garden District, or at the very least a streetcar ride up St. Charles to our beautiful Audubon Park. Take a ride on the Mississippi River, or if you have time, a swamp tour in the rural areas out of town. Your hotel concierge can help.

4. For the rest of your trip, go bar hopping in the Quarter.  You're guranteed to meet many a fun local! Try something strange like absinthe if you like the taste of black licorice (but only one...that's a warning!). Same goes for food...try alligator bites for an appetizer if you find them!

5. Have a very happy anniversary!!!

Thanks so much, Troy!

I've jotted all of those places down for a visit... there's so much to do and see, I don't know how we're going to see it all in just a couple of days!

The absinthe scares me, but when in Rome, right?

Thanks again for the tips - I'm so looking forward to hitting the road!

Troy,

I have no idea when I will be in New Orleans again -- probably not for a while.  And I really like the city.  It is great to see your posts that tell what is happening recovery wise.  I really miss Cafe du Monde.  I asked them to open one in Las Vegas, but they said they only open cafes where they have family members.  I miss the coffee and beniets.

For Ashley (comment #1), I can highly recommend the Aquarium of the Americas and the Audubon Zoo, although I have not been to either of them since Hurricane Katrina.

I went to Southern Decadence every year from 1977 to 1992, and then made it one last time in 1998 when Hurricane Earl (I think it was) made landfall near New Orleans. Decadence was virtually deserted that year. Since being estranged from my family (for reasons which I'm sure you understand since we're talking Southern Decadence here), I have not been back to New Orleans since 2001. I have brothers and sisters living in Slidell, Chalmette, and New Orleans by UNO.

I have Never been to New Orleans and I cant think of a better time than Southern Decadence.  I will Definitly have to try Y'alls Gator and see how it stacks up to ours.  Im open for Hotel Suggestions.  Oh, a cool fun guide would help too ;-)
