Senator Jay Rockefeller, a Democrat from West Virginia, has been working on a "worst case" scenario legislation that would give complete control of the Internet to President Obama in a ‘cyber security emergency'.
The bill, S.773, allow the president to "declare a cybersecurity emergency" relating to "non-governmental" computer networks and furthermore empowers the government to do "what is necessary' in response to the threat. I understand there is similiar legislation in Congress.
An issue I have with the proposed bill is that the feds want to create a Federal Certification Program for "Cybersecurity Professionals" and that certain networks and computer systems in the free and private sector can only be managed by one of those trustworthy individuals who has been awarded such a license.
I'm sorry, but this is just downright scary stuff and I believe that if the Nanny Government we are evolving into is going to have control over the Internet, then we as free citizens had better step up and allow our collective voices to be heard.
The legislation is so vague, it doesn't even hint at what Senator Rockefeller thinks may trigger the necessity for the Government to seize control over the internet. But, it's not just the Internet. The term "CYBER" is defined as ANYTHING that relates to the Internet, Telecommunications (both cell and land lines), computers and computer networks.
I am approaching the Autumn Years of my life and I have seen a lot take place. I am a front line warrior on the front lines of the Cold War - having spent Christmas 1977 less than 20 yards from a Russian Machine Gun on the border of the Iron Curtain.
I can remember where I was when president Kennedy was shot, and never did believe the ‘Grassy Knoll" Conspiracy theory. I remember when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon - and I always believed it was the moon and not in a desolate air force hanger as many conspiracy theorists had (and still) believed. I've always been a guy that believes what he sees on the surface.
However, since the darkest day in American History, 9/11/01, I have really started to question the motives of our government. Today, when I read about this legislation, I felt as if I were living in the unpublished chapter of George Orwells book, "1984". Yes, we have a need to be safe and we have expectations that our government will provide us with a certain level of security.
I for one hope that we can find a balance to the power grab that the American Government has made over the past (and preceding) decades and allow Americans the RIGHT to LIFE, LIBERTY and the PURSUIT of HAPPINESS. I for one can't be happy with the feds taking up residency in my computers or on my cell phone...can you?

Scarey stuff for sure. I can not think of any reason the Government should have access to the private individual internet dealings. (ok I do understand controlling child porn and terrorists) but other than those please someone tell me why we should give up our rights to free speech on or off the internet?
