Part II - Inspect and replenish your Emergency Box

R-U Ready for Mother Nature - Part II - Your Checklist

This will be three part  blog series series

Are you ready for an emergency?  September is national preparedness month.

September is national preparedness month. I agree it is best to be prepared with some essentials and not have to run out at the last minute to buy some of these items. With the weather going to turn cold and the start of school, we hear more about different type virus's that may be lurking; this is definitely is a good time to replenish your Emergency Box. Hand Sanitizer (67.6 Fl. Oz) I bought several to put in strategic places throughout the house and to give to the kids. We already see some hurricanes developing; therefore, this is a good time to think about getting some things in order.

Have a variety of  batteries on hand and flashlight.

Have a battery powered radio and clock so you can stay informed.

Make sure you have corded or cellular phone; cordless phones don't work without electricity. You will be able to charge from your car.

Have extra cash on hand. Keep plenty bottled water and non-perishable food on hand.

If you are on medication make sure you have extra so you won't run short.

If your electricity goes off check for blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers. Don't forget to reset the main breaker by switching the breaker off and back on. (If you are without power and your neighbors are also without power let your electric provider know). Don't forget to turn off electrical appliances when your service is disrupted.

Keep freezer doors closed and the same with refrigerator door to help preserve food until the power comes back.

Open the circuit breakers to major appliances to turn them off.  When power is restored, turn them back on in 15-minute intervals to avoid overloading. (This was a recommendation from PEC)

You may also want to do this with your telephones and computers. Unplug for a ten minutes then plug back in one at a time 3-5 minutes apart. (This was recommended to us )

Be sensible if an emergency should happen. Remember to use lots of hand sanitizer to help prevent some unwanted illness with what they say this year will be risky with the  H1N1 (previously called Swine Flu)Find out more about novel H1N1 and CDC's public health response. http://www.cdc.gov/flu/

Melissa - This time of year we always buy a few extra items when we go to the store. Some times the big box stores run out like they did a few years back when everyone was looking for compressors.

C Tann-Starr - When Ceil came home with that huge bottle of hand sanitizer I knew what she was thinking.

Dale you are correct. I knew what Ceil was doing when they said there were a couple hurricanes forming. We sure could use a "little" disturbance up our way to bring in some real nice rain.

Dale glad you cambe back by. Everyone feel free to add your items to the list.

Richard - Ceil says washing your hands and especially the hand santizer. I noticed when my brother was in the hospital recently they have hand santizer dispensers all over the hospital for folks to use.

Ricki - I have no doubt you will be prepared; even with your good Cedar Fever preventive.

I’ve found that Kellogg’s frosted mini-wheats make great snack food, and the fiber fills you up and is also good for you, so my emergency kit has some in it.

Russel: Great hint, another addition to the emergency checklist for the emergency kit. I like the strawberry coated mini wheats.
