Home Owner Robbed and Beaten Up Showing His Listed Home to Strangers

It’s a lesson worth repeating: Do NOT let strangers into your home, no matter how nice they seem. Glendale, Arizona police are looking for suspects in robbery/assault where one man failed to remember Don't let stranger in your listed homethis important instruction.

The incident occurred at a listing near Old Town Glendale. The homeowner was watering his front lawn, when a couple approached and asked to see his home. Initially, the homeowner did what all good agents teach their sellers to do: he referred the inquiry to the listing agent.

The couple, however, continued to chat with the homeowner, who eventually let his guard down and allowed the seemingly nice lady and man into his house. Once inside, they robbed him of his wallet and damaged his cell phone so he could not call the police. The assailants are described as white, late 30s to early 40s in age. The man is 5'8"; to 5'9"; and the woman Don't let strangers in your listed homeslightly smaller, both with medium builds.

The homeowner was unable to provide any additional details. The suspects were driving a late model brown/dark gold 4-door Buick with a coat hanger as its antenna. If you see such a couple, please contact local police with a location and, if possible, a license plate number.

Agents, it if you’ve forgotten or let it slide, this is a GREAT reminder to reiterate to your sellers that they should NEVER allow anyone they do not know to access their home. They should refer any and all inquiries to the listing agent, no matter how nice the “prospective buyers” seem. This, as we’ve seen in this unfortunate incident, is for the homeowner’s own protection.

Wow that's awful... on the bright side, the story will be an effective way for us Realtors out there to drive home the need to contact us before letting anyone see the home.

Lindsey - every once in awhile stuff like this happens and sellers 'get the message' fast.  Poor guy was hurt really really bad.  "and they seemed like such a nice couple".  sure.....

Anna, It is shocking that scumbags are victimizing people in such a way and depending on their good nature to gain access into their homes. Yes, it is IMPORTANT to warn clients to call their agents before allowing anyone into their homes!!! Thanks so much for the warning...

Holy Cow, the guy probably thought he had some hot buyers.  I think we all get a little excited when someone shows interest in our home for sale or one of our listings, hopefully the excitement doesn't ruin our good sense.

Good reminder Ana, One of my first warnings to my sellers is exactly that one. Do not allow anyone without a Realtor into the house! My other standard warning: Remove all prescription drugs and medication from sight, put them in a safe place. And finally the one about identity theft: Do not leave your tax returns, bank statements, credit card statements laying around the house while is being shown. Did I miss anything!

Anna,

Great post but I am sorry to hear someone had to learn their lesson the hard way.  This would be a good article to give to all sellers warning them about the hazards of letting someone in their home!

Thanks for writing it up for all of us to share.

Hello Anna.  In today's time, we can take NOTHING for granted.  There are opportunists in every field seeking to take advantage.... We must WATCH as well as pray... then use discernment, and allow nothing to distract.  Hopefully your timely post will help someone that reads it.  Thank your for your thoughtfulness in posting it.

What a terrible tale, Anna! Hope they catch these criminals soon.

Not only do we have to warn our sellers, we also need to remind ourselves not to fly out the door to show a home to strangers who just called!

Wanda - you're welcome. Now if all our clients would listen to us.......I know sometimes they say -'oh they seem so nice - what could hurt?

Wanda 2 :)  Look at that - what do you get when you have two Wanda's in a row!!  How often does that happen! He probably did think that - poor judgement on his part.  Bummer.

Antonio - yes we have a list of warnings we give to all sellers. You just have to these days to be on the safe side.  I see you're having fun with using lots of color!!

Hey Miss Carra (of shall I say Cosmic Cow Pie)  So true.  I think most of us do our jobs telling the clients - it is the clients who don't follow the rules.   It's all over the news here in Phx so that should get sellers to think twice before letting somebody in.  I hope so anyway.

Lynn - amazing that FSBO's are aok with showing - I always think that is crazy.

Hi Rice - I always tell me agents to pay attention to their intuition - yes even the guys.  There have been a few situations over the years that just didn't feel right and I made arrangements to take along a guy agent or chose not to work with them.  Pay attention!!!!!!!

Irene - YES!!!!  We make the people come to office first for a buyers interview or they go to home with a fellow agent.  Gotta be careful out there!

This is a good reminder to us all.  I agree...home owners just need to say no.  And for the real estate agents...never let your guard down.  Be safe!
