Back when John Kerry was running for President the Governor of Massachusetts had the right to "appoint" his successor to the U.S. Senate.
One problem, the Governor of Massachusetts was a conservative. So, Ted Kennedy lobbied for and got passed, a bill that would provide for a "special election" in order to replace a Senatorial seat that had been vacated. I think this is truly the best thing of course. Let the people pick their Senator through an election, not an appointment.
Another problem; before his death Ted Kennedy sought to change the law he wanted, back to an appointment process. His party is now actively trying to do this in order to keep 60 seats in the Senate. You see the governor of Massachusetts is now a liberal and the people of Massachusetts now don't deserve a vote on his replacement.
Does the Democratic Party think, that because of their recent policy and legislation decisions they may have a problem?
An election would be a nice referendum on the policies and legislation that is currently being discussed. Having an election in a Liberal hot bed like Massachusetts should be exactly what the DNC wants. They could shout from the rooftops about how great their policies are and show as proof a recent election.
Unless They Lost.
