Can we all, or at least a vast majority of us, agree that our Health Care System is not perfect, that it has flaws, and could stand to be reformed in SOME manner?  That it could be improved?

This is not a place to determine exactly what manner it should be reformed, but just to see if we can agree that leaving things exactly as they are is not an ideal to be aiming for.

As a poll this question would have the options for answering:

A) Yes - I agree that the U.S. Health Care System could be improved.

B) No - I think the U.S. Health Care System has no room for improvement.

What do you think?

David - Every person with some amount of sense will agree that there's reform needed.  Or to answer your question directly, yes, room for improvement.

David - I think the health care system is fine and the best in the world. However, we can improve access to that care. Maybe that is parsing words, but, if we don't, that's what leads to draconian and poorly written bills like HB3200.

Thank you all for participating!

Mike - I think there's going to be more agreement with the idea that our system can be improved than that our system is the best in the world.  As you say, maybe that's parsing words, but the point here is to find the things that everyone, or at least almost everyone can agree on.  My hope is that by finding points of agreement, we can lay to rest some of the hyperbole that's a hindrance to dialog.  (In this case, I'm hoping to lay to rest the exaggerated statement, "All the opponents (Republicans, Dissenters, Town Hall Protesters, etc) want is the status quo.  They are against any change."  And with 5 out of 6 definitely agreeing it looks to be proving true.  (And I wouldn't be at all surprised if Ellen held essentially the same view as you.)

As for myself, not having looked into every other health care system in the world, in fact, not having much more than glanced at a handful of other systems, I'm not comfortable declaring that we have "the best" system.  I am comfortable saying we have a very good system.  And I think it could still be improved.

We do have an excellent health care system in the states. If we didn't why would so many people come here from other countries?

Can it be improved. Sure-what can't be? Nothing. But the way to improve it isn't by foolishly heading into socialized medicine or for those that are sensitive to that particular term how about a Giant HMO on steroids that the government is proposing(without fully reading the bill and its components).

David, we may be the best when it comes to heart surgeons and brain surgery- but when it comes to preventive care and maintenance- which is what the majority of the system is used for, it sucks.

So technically Mike would be right by saying its the best in the world in certain areas. When it comes to the rest of it. It needs improvement.

Btw, thank you for posting something that we could all finally agree upon!

Nogui, preventive care and maintenance are exactly what we should all be paying for on our own.  We don't need insurance for that any more than we need insurance for oils changes for the car or new carpeting for the house.  Thanks for bringing that up.  Eliminating preventive care and maintenance from the insurance equation will lwoer the cost of insurance by quite a bit.

Yes, the system could use a measured improvement.

Or we could all go to med school and learn to work on ourselves, right?
