Ever since I got my Canon Rebel XSi camera back in June, I've been going for much longer daily walks, usually anywhere from one to three hours.
The problem with doing that is that one will lose weight. Trust me, one will lose weight.
The unproblem is that I've been exploring San Diego County during my walks. Since my other half gets a 40% discount at Borders Books and Music, I bought Walking San Diego: Where To Go To Get Away From It All, by Lonnie Hewitt and Barbara Moore; and Afoot & Afield: San Diego County, by Jerry Schad.
I've been a fan of Jerry Schad since I first arrived in San Diego in April 1993 since he's being doing weekly hiking columns in the San Diego Reader for at least that long.
During one of my walks, I found a place where the kingfishers hang out early in the morning, and they are not afraid of me and my Canon, pun intended.

Russel: I guess this is a presentation of what one might call a "bird's eye view." What great pictures. I have a Canon Rebel XTi. What is the difference between that, and the XSi camera that you have ?
Also... since many of the photos I use in my posts are taken right off my big screen digital television... I think the lens that came with the camera works fairly well. So, two questions: One, is there a better lens I could be using to be taking pictures off a television screen. And two: I have tried taking some pictures off the 24 inch monitor screen on my iMAC computer. Obviously, with that, I am sitting fairly close to the monitor screen... rather than further away from it, as I would be while viewing my television screen.
With that in mind, what would you guess might be a good lens to use when taking pictures off my iMac monitor screen. I took several pictures of some of the scenes from the Kennedy tributes yesterday... and took them off my monitor screen. I think a few of them came out ok, and some... not so good. Any ideas ?
Hey, Chris Ann - I've always thought it interesting that the San Diego Zoo doesn't have any kingfishers, but maybe because if you know where to go, you can see lots of them out in the wild.
Hey, Karen Anne - The XTi has 10.1 MP while the XSi has 12.2. I think that's basically the only real difference. Generally, you'll have to match the shutter speed with the refresh speed of your television or camera to get the best pictures. That can be affected by the f/stop of the lens, but with the lens that came with the camera you should be okay. Look at the settings for your monitor and you should find the refresh rate. Then you'll have to do some calculations -- or some trial and error -- to find what shutter speed you should use. When you download your pictures to the computer, if you click on the picture, you should (Vista) see all the settings for the picture. I suspect the Mac does the same thing.
Chris Ann: I bet there are also some folks who might consider both you and I... "tough birds..." LOL. With that in mind, I HAVE been wondering who that nice looking gentleman with that fancy camera who's been following me was. Uh oh.
Russel, that is beautiful! The birds were posing for you I think, LOL. I have a few more places I want to get to for pictures, then the leaves will change and I will start all over again, LOL. Thank you for the wonderful show!
Russel: Many of the pictures I would love to download right from the screen to my computer, and then onto Picasa... will not budge. That is why I have been resorting... just in the past few days... to taking pictures with my Canon... right off the screen. This is while using my MAC. I have not tried it with my PC yet.
Hey, Andrea - They certainly weren't afraid of me. I was using my 300 mm lens from a distance of about three feet, and they just stared at me. Now the pelicans are a different story. They just refuse to cooperate with me.
Hey, Karen Anne - You lost me with MAC, Picassa, etc. Haven't got a clue.

Russel: These look like some seriously tough birds. You've really done an amazing job capturing them with your camera. Thanks.
