Things you might not know about the U.S. Open Tennis Championship:
- The first U.S. Open was held in August 1881, at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island.
- The first "tournament" was simply an "entertainment diversion" for "high society."
- Over 700,000 fans are expected to enter the gates during the two weeks of play.
- In 1968, when the U.S. National Championships became the U.S. Open, total prize money for 96 men and 64 women in all events was a whopping $100,000. This year's total prize money for over 600 men and women will be over $21.6 million. The men's and women's champions will take home a cool $1.6 million. Coming in second, which means losing to the champion, also means collecting $800,000. I wouldn't mind losing.
