Things you might not know about the U.S. Open Tennis Championship:

  1. The first U.S. Open was held in August 1881, at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island.
  2. The first "tournament" was simply an "entertainment diversion" for "high society."
  3. Over 700,000 fans are expected to enter the gates during the two weeks of play.
  4. In 1968, when the U.S. National Championships became the U.S. Open, total prize money for 96 men and 64 women in all events was a whopping $100,000. This year's total prize money for over 600 men and women will be over $21.6 million. The men's and women's champions will take home a cool $1.6 million. Coming in second, which means losing to the champion, also means collecting $800,000. I wouldn't mind losing.

Keep up with all the matches at the official U.S. Open web site, and you can watch many of them on television from your own Mission Valley condo right here in San Diego, California.

Hi Jim:

I love tennis too.  In fact, I played this morning!

Big fan of the Williams sisters...

Just thought you would like to know that I'm working on your project and watching tennis, too.

Hey, Toula - We have a tennis court over at the condominium complex but I don't get to play much anymore. My marketing guru, with whom I used to play, doesn't have the knees for tennis anymore and we're both too competitive to just go out there and hit the ball to each other. We've tried that and we still wind up keeping score. I like the Williams sisters only because they are from the United States. My sentimental favorite in this Open is Kim Clijsters. Over on the men's side, I'm rooting for Roger Federer. My marketing guru is a big Williams sisters fan and he's a Roddick fan over on the men's side.

Hey, Bryan - Imagine finding you touring the message board tonight. You must be bored with my project -- LOL.
