Moving Day

Moving Van Parking Permit on a Cambridge streetThey're back!!!

It wasn't until I spotted my fifth or sixth moving van this morning that light dawned over Marblehead and I realized what day it was - it was moving day in Cambridge and Somerville.

The annual pilgrimage was taking place - the students were coming back to Cambridge, Somerville and Boston. Moving trucks were on every block, discarded furniture that just wouldn't fit in the truck lined the sidewalks, and it was obvious that half the drivers on the road had no idea where they were going or how to drive on our streets.

Without students the city would be a very different place. There's a liveliness to our town - restaurants, clubs and shops exist because of the students who frequent them, and they fill our apartments - keeping landlords happy.

But as I waited in line at the supermarket and in traffic driving home this afternoon I couldn't help but regret that the quieter streets of summer are no more - until next year.

Being in an area with MAJOR schools - Duke University, NC State University and University of North Carolina, I can certainly understand the moving in week!  It get's CRAZY!  But, like you said, the students bring SO MUCH to the area and while it may make my commutes a little longer or my wait time for coffee a little longer I certainly do appreciate them!  (Until one of the schools wins a game and all hell breaks loose....;) )

Hi Leesa ~ Another small but fun side benefit is the opportunity to get some great stuff curbside on move-in / move-out days.  I spotted an antique oak bureau on the curb yesterday when I left my open house - if I wasn't on my way to an appointment I would have been tempted.

Hi Liz,

Yes, we folks in College towns know exactly what you're talking about. The longer waits in traffic are irritating, but the peace of summer is only as good as it is because we know our students will be back. Life would soon become pretty boring if we had it all year round.:-)

LOL  I guess its a blessing and a curse at the same time. You need them, but don't always want them around.  Good luck!

Hi Denise ~ And our traffic is pretty intense for sure.  Funny though - the temptation is to think it's the students but after writing a blog post yesterday about new development at one end of the city I found myself thinking No wonder we have traffic jams! Unless all those people are riding bikes traffic's bound to be heavy.

Hi John ~ Exactly!  I used to work at colleges and boy - did we love the summers!! Students made the place go round but summers sure were great.

GOOD MORNING LIZ!  Such a love/hate thing!  UA is a fairly big school - combine that with snowbirds - I get the same feeling here!  And have to leave home 10 minutes earlier than in the summer!  But again, students (and snowbirds) bring a lot of life back to our community! -- Gabriell

We have towns like that here that for 3 months they are dead and then comes fall the students come back and the city becomes alive again with life.

I live a mile from San Diego State University with almost 40,000 students. It's the same here, except that college students tend to think that none of the traffic laws apply to them.

Elizabeth -

It's not so much students with us as it is government workers/Congress/etc. who all depart during the August recess.  All of a sudden the Metro is less crowded, traffic is bearable and there are restaurant reservations to be had.

But its lonely -
