Are we prepared for mother nature ? Part Two - In case you have to leave your home...

Part I - It's time to review your "checklist" - R - U - Ready? Part I

Part III -

During Hurricane Season there is potential for catastrophic damages to occur to coastlines and inlands several hundred miles. We all know that damage can occur inland even here in the Texas Hill Country. We sometimes think of living on the coast where damage from wind and water would occur. We all found out different a few years ago.

In Part I we discussed putting together an Emergency Kit.

In Part II we discussed to plan and organize (such as evacuation route, what to take, etc).

In Part III we will discuss preparing the outside (exterior) of your home, whether you stay or leave and some miscellaneous reminders.

We can even feel the effects if a hurricane should hit the Gulf Coast here in the Texas Hill Country.

Be sure to inspect your current Emergency Box and replenish with fresh supplies.

1. Know the proper evacuation route for your area.

2. If you are leaving your home, remember to turn off the gas pilot light for your water heater and furnace.

3. Turn off all gas line valves to any appliances and turn off at the meter

4. Turn off your master water supply

5. Leave your master breaker on for your freezer and refrigerator and your security alarm.

6. Unplug all your small appliances (toasters, blenders, lamps etc).

7. Secure  your outdoor lawn furniture, potted plants ( best to put in the garage).

8. Secure pool equipment - Clear the area of any small items.

9. Make sure your automobiles and trucks are full with gasoline.

10.Make sure trees are trimmed and no branches that could break and cause roof damage.

Here is a list of things you should take with your if you have to leave your home.

 1. Food and snacks for two days

 2. Two gallons of water per individual

 3. Clothing for one week

 4. First aid kit

 5. Medications for 30 days

 6.  Flashlights and spare batteries

 7. Cash

8, Important documents (wills, insurance card & policies, licenses, medical and bank records as needed)

 9. Pet care items (food, bowl, secure pet in a pet carrier)

10.Tell a neighbor that is staying where you are going and how to contact you. Exchange numbers and let family   members that live in other areas where you will be staying.

11.Computer (DVD players, games for kids).

These are just a few reminders. In our next blog we will give you some reminders to pepare the outside of your home in case of hurricane or storm if you should be in that path.

Very helpful and very kind of you to send reminders...and detailed at that. You face many challenges with tropical storms and tornedos too.

We face the challenges of earthquakes and now severe drougts from lack of rain.

I hope you'll remember me if you learn of anyone moving to "The OC" and I will do the same!

Best regards.

THANK YOU for the list, it's never too often to remind us that we need to be prepared for disaster.  We in California are reminded every now and then.  good post.

Great check list for those who live in hurricane prone areas. Thankfully, we do not have to worry about those in my neck of the woods...

Michael - We often hear of terrible fires in California. We are also experiencing severe drought here in Texas. Mother nature is definitely unpredictible.

Shirley - Ceil is the one that  grew up in Florida, she can definitely tell some stores of Key West and the Florida keys. I'm a home grown Texas boy.

Terrylynn just watched a report on TV about the fires that are presently going on in California. Two firefighters lost their life yesterday fighting the blaze. Our prayers for those two are offered up for them and their families. Hopefully no more lives will be lost.

Michael: Ceil's brother lives in Rockport and our son has a place in that same area. They both watch the weather closely. We have seen what a hurricane wind and water can do. Folks always need to be prepared for some type of emergency.

Is it that time of year already? I guess I'd better print out your checklist and get ready. It would be nice to get some rain, but in my experience, when it rains it really pours here.

Cheers,

Robin

Robin - Been keeing an eye on The Weather Channel, already been a few disturbances churning. We need moisture but not too much like the amount a full blown hurricane would bring. After watching all the fires in California we also need to be prepared since we are in a severe drought. We set down and gathered our important papers the other evening, marriage certificate, car and truck papers, boa papers, insurance policies etc just to get organized again. All these things are very important.

Carl,

Another great list of things to remember.  I wonder how many individuals in the Galveston/Houston area now have generators?

Richard. Good question. If I lived on the Gulf Coast  I would have one. I have a generator for the RV but could also use for the house. I've had it three years and it has never been out the box.

Russel - In your case I would say yes debit or credit but what if the machine didn't work then you could pay cash. Cash as in green paper or silver or cooper. How about a check?
