I am so sick and tired of getting these dumb spam comments in emails from back in the day when you automatically signed up for emails when someone posted.  God only knows how many blogs I commented on....and I keep getting these stupid spams telling me not to eat more than I can lift, or where to find a place to sell gold...please...

Very few consumers post on AR anyway - and if they want to contact you they most certainly will by sending you an email.  I had my blog "open" for 2 years, and only had maybe 3 consumer comments.  But I did get a LOT of emails from clients.

Stop these spammers in their tracks by requiring membership to comment.  Give those of us who comments on your blogs a break....

Or perhaps ActiveRain can increase their level of spam control?

Karen: Consider simply reporting the spam and deleting it. The spam comes in waves and the AR powers that be are doing a grand job in doing what they can to prevent it.

I have reported spam and deleted it.  My point is I don't want to do that anymore.  I'm sick of it!  It can easily be stopped by making it required to be a member to post comments.  I haven't gotten a single spam on my blog since I changed the settings.

I allow non-member comments because I have readers and clients who read them and may want to comment. I value their feedbacks and insights, hence I keep that on my blog.

It's frustrating I know.

On your end, could you not use the "Notify me of new comments" box? I used to do that several years ago, but I quit doing that just because of the mounts of emails I would get.

5 Featured Posts Hit Router

Guess I've been lucky.  I only had a rash of them a couple of months ago when everyone on AR was being hit.  Other than that, I haven't had a problem.  I get annoyed with the people (members) that comment on my blog, but don't even actually read my post.  It's like they just wanted to get their points in and decided to put some useless comment on my blog which didn't even really have anything to do with what I actually posted about!  ARRRGH!  :)

We also have a few spammer members, and while they're not currently commenting, they could if they wished. It is annoying, but I just report, delete, and try to ignore them an move on.

Outside Blog

I didn't know there was a setting for that - so I will look for it.  If I post for consumers with any topic that opens the door for a member who might be jealous and write something deragatory, I am thinking of just shutting off comments.  The post is for consumers and I don't want negativity from those few unprofessionals to go out cluttering up my message on the net.

I don't subscribe when I comment anymore.  These are coming from OLD blogs, some of them written in 2007 or 2008...I don't have time to go back to every single blog I commented on since I joined and "unsubscribe"...

It's not an uncommon thing to be required to "join" a system to leave a comment.  I have had many customers email me rather than comment, even when my blog was "open."

I know not everyon is going  to agree with me but I just had to vent.  I resent the fact that spammers can infiltrate every aspect of the online world.

The comments being left would be very difficult to filter.  They aren't typical spam words, and many of them don't even have links.

The spam that has arrived on the site recently is almost comical. It has no rhyme or reason and is not even linking to anything which is usually the case with spammers.

Exactly, Bill - it's funny except for the time it wastes...there is no real way to filter it, really...unless you blanket block certain ip addresses...and then you risk really blocking legit people

The only other option I can think of is to allow only MODERATED comments - meaning the blog owner has to approve the comment before it is posted  This is how I have my wordpress blog set up and it works VERY well.
