Your Reputation in Life from a New York Feng Shui Consultant's Point of View

My father used to tell me the BEST thing he could leave me in life was not money, it was his name.  A spotless reputation, he said, would get me where I wanted to be in life.

It took me years to understand that but as a result, I never changed my name.  To this day, I STILL meet people who remember my father fondly and have never met a person who did not like him.

While on a Feng Shui Consultation just last year for a client in Hicksville Long Island NY, she mentioned she had recently retired from a job she'd had for over 30 years at a Bowling Alley in Levittown New York.  I mentioned that I'd grown up near there and my father had been on several leagues.

"I KNEW your name sounded familiar," she said.  "I remember your father well; he was always laughing and having so much fun."  It was a wonderful remark especially considering that my father passed so many years ago.

I see so many people jaded by the economy these days and I find it so sad.  They are not thinking of their reputations or what they are leaving behind in people's memories...they are thinking of making a quick "buck" and not caring about people the way they used to.  I sometimes wonder what has happened to customer service at all---it seems to be a lost art.

Like many of you, I value the name I have built and my reputation as well.  If someone isn't happy with something, I will do everything I can to correct the situation.  While this economy can be a challange for many of us I do believe when it changes those of us that have taken good care of our clients will benefit the most.    We are the ones that value our names.

Carole,

Thanks for sharing.  Great name by the way. I never thought of Feng Shui in a name but you have demonstrated otherwise.

Hi Carole~  I have to agree with you.  Without a good name and reputation, you have nothing.  You are so lucky that your dad left you his legacy!

It is always nice to have someone recall fond memories of your loved ones!  Your father was a great man, as was mine!  I don't live near where I grew up anymore so don't run into this!  Make sure you thank your father in prayer!

Carole, I did not keep my last name, (well I use my maiden name as my middle name) but I will always be a Gifford.  I had a wonderful upbringing and you are right my parents raised me to always do the right thing and NEVER tell a lie.

It sounds like we had some similar upbringing!

I definitely agree with you on this point.  My dad is remembered for all the great things he did in his life..  as is my mom.  It is remarkable and it is good to know that "individuals" can make a big difference even if they don't have one of those "famous" names.

Carole, my dad taught me the same thing. I heard it over and over again about it growing up. I think that and having good credit were daddy's most consistent lectures.

The one thing you can never lose is your name and reputation unless of course you do things in a manor that would give you a bad rap.

Carole--That must be why I like you so much, we think alike on this...Your father was a very wise man. You were very fortunate to have had someone like him in your life to teach you what integrity really means.

Barbara, I do believe our reputations are everything.  People don't forget good customer service.

Vickie, I believe so too.  A good legacy left behind is the best thing you can leave your children.

Bridget, I do always thank my father---He did leave me a wonderful gift in a good name.

Sharon, You are so right...you can lose it in a very short time if you're not careful with each and every client.

Marchel, It really was a wonderful way to be raised and I tried very hard to pass it on to my own children.

Jennifer, I'm fortunate to have that name.  Thank you for the milestone but it doesn't feel like one...the 500 posts did!

Hannah, I believe too that your reputation is priceless.  We always need to protect it.

Joan, Isn't it a nice feeling?  I always hope some people remember me well!

Missy, Both my parents didn't just tell me, they lived their lives that way. And I too was reminded often about being careful with credit cards when I first got them!    I too was careful to SHOW my children by example and hope it helped.

Bill, That's something most of us would never do.  We've spent so much time building good reputations and connections, I would hate to see them lost.

Teri, I see some people don't have in anymore.....the "art" of customer service is gone for some and I'm sorry to see that.

I learned this early on as well, but then had it demonstrated by my mother in her business, as I got older. My father often says of her that she will "hurt herself" in her efforts to correct a problem. He means that physically and financially. I have been with her chasing down an address at 8:00 p.m. on Valentine's Day, so that her customers flowers got delivered, even though they gave her a bad address. Her name WAS her business!

Hi Carole: What I was thinking of as I read your blog was that you must be Italian and it put me in mind of my Italian dad who had such a cheerful disposition and was so well loved. What a wonderful legacy - the integrity of his good name AND his wonderful, cheerful disposition. Thank you!

Hi Carol:  How powerful "what we leave behind in people's memories".  It's so easy to forget about the impression we are making sometimes.  Sometimes, I wonder just how many people in the world today really care about having a "good name".  We can start with some of our own leaders but I digress.

Wow, Carole what an absolutely wonderful legacy your father has left you - his good name. And, here you are following in his footsteps!  Oh, he would be so proud of the wonderful job you're doing in continuing to build the value of YOUR NAME! Your father must have been a phenomenal man and you must miss him dearly GREAT POST and keep up the GREAT JOB!
