If it's September in Dallas, the State Fair is just around the corner!  For many Texans, one of the highlights of the fair is the annual Fried Foods competition called the Big Tex Choice Award.  Each year, finalists for the best new fried food are announced and a cook-off is held to decide on that year's winner.  The finalist entries are all available for purchase at food stands during The State Fair of Texas, which runs at Dallas' Fair Park from September 25 to October 18, 2009.

This year's finalists for best new fried food are:

Deep Fried Butter: Sweetened, flavored, whipped butter wrapped in dough and deep-fried.

Green Goblins: Cherry peppers packed with spicy shredded chicken and guacamole, battered and deep fried. Topped with queso.

Twisted Yam On A Stick: Spiral-cut yam fried crispy, rolled in butter, dusted with cinnamon and sugar.

Fernie's Deep Fried Peaches & Cream: Peaches coated with batter and deep fried, sprinkled with streusel and cream. Served with raspberry sauce.

Texas Fried Pecan Pie: Pecan pie battered and deep fried, drizzled with caramel sauce and topped with cream and chopped pecans.

Country Fried Pork Chips: Thin pork loin seasoned, dipped in corn meal and deep fried. Served with ketchup or gravy.

Sweet Jalapeno Corn Dog Shrimp: Shrimp coated with sweet and spicy batter, deep fried and served with spicy glaze.

Fried Peanut Butter Cup Macaroon: Peanut butter cup wrapped in coconut macaroon, fried and dusted with powdered sugar. Ice cream scoop optional.

In previous years, the winners of this competition have included such favorites as Chicken Fried Bacon, the Fried Banana Split and Deep-Fried Twinkies.

I was joking in the title of this post, but with choices like Deep Fried Butter, perhaps a defibrillator really is in order!

Steve,

This sounds like quite the competition!  The Green Goblin sounds pretty good -- may want to try a non-deep fried version at home!

Now don't laugh but I think some of these thing sound good, Steve.  That pecan pie thingy for instance.

You should sample some of these and blog about it!  I hope you do. :o)

The deep fried peaches and cream sounds good to me!  If you go you'll have to try a few of these and report back!  LOL   That is ... if you're still standing!

I would really want to try the Fried Butter. Gosh, I can just imagine my SIL's face. She doesnt eat butter because she thinks it's unhealthy. Fried that's no question. I might just try it just to see what is her reaction on her face.

Good Grief!  I just finished a one year "lower the cholestrol" quest.  I have succeeded . . . . until now.

I just felt my arteries harden reading that menu.

Well, a deep fried salad would go great with the Green Goblins and offer some balance. Love creative recipes... :)

Steve:  I have made it my policy to make sure I visit the Texas State Fair at least once every half century.  LOL.  My last visit was in 1983... so I've still got a little time left to sneak in my next visit.  But I will take your advice, and make sure I have my portable defib with me.  Be Prepared !

Steve: Here in iowa the fair is already over. We just call the fried food competition "eating", as it seems like all the food at the fair is fried. Deep friend Snickers (R) on a stick?

I could go for a "twisted yam on a stick" right now.  Yum, yum.  Reading your post has upset my stomach!

Deep fried butter? I thought you had to be kidding, but no. The jalapeno shrimp thing sounds tasty, though. Are you going to do a taste test and come back to share results? Come on, what are you doing tomorrow? Why, you could be at the fair shooting photographs of stuffing your face with these tasty little treats and talking into a tape recorder.
