Old maps of St. Louis Missouri are available online from the U.S. Library of Congress.  I don't know when or how I became fascinated by the old historical maps of St. Louis, Missouri.  It may have been the World Book Encyclopedias or National Geographic.  Or, it may have been the look and feel of the art work associated with the maps. However, I am definitely hooked and have even purchased a few while traveling - another addiction of sorts.

Old Historical Maps of St Louis Missouri

Since school is back in session, I thought I would share with you a free site from the U.S. Government that acts as a clearinghouse for educational resources available from Federal agencies - Free Resources for Educational Excellence.  It includes a series of topics of interest to students at various educational level grouped by topic.  Or, you can view topic by medium such as source documents, video, photographs, and animations.

Ryan - To look at these maps and think about how much development there has been since then . . . and what kinds of changes there will be 50-100 years from now.

I also like Monique's idea of using them as a gift.

Ryan, I am a lover of maps! Thanks, I will check out our area for old maps. Also bookmarked the Fed Govt. resource - it will come in handy for school projects, I'm sure!

Kristina - I have been meaning to get out to you and your partner's coffee meetings on Tuesdays.  Are you still holding them?

Pat - I just thought it was an interesting repository of free stuff - I like the maps, old posters and photographs available on the site.

Monique - You bet.  However, the resolution isn't the greatest on the jpegs.

Stacie - The maps are interesting.  When Forest Park was first laid out, it was considered to be in the country.  When you look at the early maps, you can see that there was little if anything built west of Grand.  Grand is now roughly the half way East-West point for the City.

Sharon - No doubt about it - it is a nice collection for students studying history, art, etc.

Ryan - Old maps are very cool to see !  I really love seeing old maps of areas that I currently live in and try to imagine how life was like.  It is amazing in some places how much things have changed.  And even more amazing in others where it has not.

This would be a nice look at St. Louis in its infancy.  I think that I will be heading over to check them out.

Stephanie - If you look closely at the maps, the St. Louis boundary has expanded greatly beyond the borders shown.  I love the old maps and seein streets that have new names or didn't even exist back then.

Don - I hope you do so.  Thanks you for referring Rachel to me.  It was a pleasure speaking with her and hope my advice was of assistance.
