According to the August 2009 Backpacker Magazine, there's one more reason why Brevard, North Carolina is a great place to call home. The magazine, along with The Outdoor Foundation, have identified America's top 25 cities to beat what they call "nature deficit disorder" and Brevard ranks among the top 25 in a list that includes Bozeman, Montana; Boulder, Colorado; Burlington, Vermont and others.
To come up with this list, they examined 38 seperate metrics, including non-outdoor factors such as unemployment, obestity rates, and others. The formula gave greatest consideration, though, to climate and trail-specific data. Some of the key sources for data were the U.S. Census, Centers for Disease Control, American Lung Association, County Business Pattern Data, USDA Economic Research Service Natural Amenity Scale, Google Earth, Boy Scouts of America, American Camp Association, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and city-data.com.
It's no surprise to us that Brevard would be included in this list. Afterall, Pisgah National Forest, Gorges State Park, and Dupont State Forest are right here in our backyard!
