Dated medicine cabinets get a facelift

How many times have you gone in to an older home and seen the slightly rusty, dated medicine cabinet with the mirror on the front? I found a solution that gives new life to these medicine cabinets without the cost of trying to replace them, let alone trying to find a newer one that fits the space. Enter staging creativity!

I took trim that you would use on crown molding and cut it to fit the size of the cabinet. I mitered the corners and used liquid nails to attach the wood to the chrome around the mirror. I stained the wood to match the cabinet beneath and put a coat of varnish on it to complete the project.

It took only 45 minutes to construct and stain with a quick varnish the following day. It looks amazing and updated the bathroom by 40 years. Quick, easy, inexpensive! What could be better?

Trish, You always have such clever ideas. Do you have any photos of this one? I used your idea for the cleanup of exterior lights just the other day. Thanks again.

How very handy of you Trish - have you got any pictures? By the way - well done on the mitering - I would have to get help from my handy husband:)

Just in case Trish doesn't have a photo...I have one.  The framed mirror on the left is a standard medicine cabinet transformed.  I bought the frame at Home Depot a couple of years ago in the bath dept...made just for medicine cabinets, unfinished.  I added the additional trim and specialty paint.  Attached it with extra heavy duty double sided tape...similar to carpet tape.

Hope this helps with the visual.  medicine cabinet frame

Hi Trish, I've seen something similar done to the big bathroom mirrors, except velcro was used to adhere the moulding to the mirror.  BUT I've never seen it done to a medicine cabinet.  Great job!

I have always wanted to try this technique with those huge mirrors that builders put up in lower end homes.  I think it would make a huge difference.  I have not gotten around to it.  Thanks for the blog.  (I'd love to see a pic of yous)

Ginger - thanks for the pic.  Great job.
