It has been said that communication is only complete when it has been "registered" by the receiver. How often do we communicate with our client or prospective client and what we say makes sense to us, but later we find the receiver did not understand what we meant? We might have used "industry" jargon or abbreviated words, like MLS.

We are familiar with such terms and converse with other agents those in the business but those outside may be confused with the terms or process that is second nature to us. In those cases, the communication was not complete, as it did not register with the person.

When I talk face to face with person, one way I can tell if they understand is through their eyes. If you look into the persons eyes, in most cases, you can read if there is understanding of what you said. It is a "feel thing" and as you try it, you will become much better at reading a person. I hope that this technique will help insure your communication registers those to talk with face to face.

Gaylen, Great post. This is huge to me because in any business it is so easy to forget the client may not understand our jargon and be too polite to say something. Ever gone to a hamburger place to get a hamburger and you were asked if you wanted one "Mc... or another "Mc.... I don't care what it's called. I call it a hamburger!

Back to the Golden Rule. Consider others as we hope to be considered.

Oh, so that's why the people who could not look me in the eye did not list with me :)

Good post Gaylen.  That's why getting people into the office to meet instead of talking over the phone is so important.  The eyes don't lie.     Gloria

I agree completely. Jargon can really be a problem in any field, but in our ours we have to already fight an uphill battle for trust. So open and clear communication is obviously a must. Thanks for the post.
