Jott has turned out to be a great tool... but not for blogging.

legal pad to-do listBack in March, I wrote about Jott in a post entitled Jott: My Head Is Spinning With Ideas And later that day we launched The Jottblog Experiment to test how well Jott would work to create "in the moment" blog posts, and a second post was written... Show Me What You Jott, Baby!

What transpired as a result of The Jottblog Experiment was a change I thought I'd never see.

I have been keeping my to-do lists on yellow legal pads for almost 20 years. In fact, over those 20 years, I've had the exact same routine, broken only momentarily by failed attempts to move my to-do list to the computer. I could never find a system that allowed me the same level of spontenaiety that paper and pen gave me.

The routine was simple.

If the to-do list got full, I'd rewrite my list, leaving off the things that were scratched through and adding the new to-do items that were now scribbled on the list. It helped me to focus on the tasks yet to be done. Sometimes it reminded me of how much I had accomplished and sometimes how much I did not accomplish. And I still have every page of those to-do lists. I often referred back to those sheets of paper to remember a phone number or to recall a name. I could never have dreamed of changing that system. As much as I love digital, when it came to to-do lists, it was all analog, all the time.

Then came Jott and Vitalist. I wrote the following over at The Jottblog Experiment on April 22...

"Vitalist and Jott might be the perfect combination of two websites. I am just beginning to test this but i found a great article that I was pointed to last night in a link from Technorati from Jott’s website that is just making sense so lets see how that it all works. I have been testing this for the past few days and I like it a great deal. I first read about the possibilities at Shainemata.net in a post entitled, 'Jott-alist.'"

vitalist logoLiking it a great deal turned into getting rid of my 20 year old way of making to-do lists. Jott allows me to add things to my Vitalist to-do list while I'm in the car or when and idea pops in my head, and the Vitalist email address allows me to forward emails that need action to my to do list. I also gave my Vitalist email address to my team members and my wife, so they could add important items to my to-do list for me.

And I don't miss the paper. Because each morning I print out my Vitalist to-do list and take it with me. It has allowed me to keep all of the benefits of my old system and marry them with more efficient digital methods. After 20 years, I've given up the legal pad. I really thought that would never happen.

Today, the Vitalist Blog referenced The Jottblog Experiment.Their post is entitled Voice New Actions To your Vitalist Account with Jott. It gives the three required steps to get up and running with Jott and Vitalist.

Check it out.

I love my paper, Jeff.  I'm getting jittery at the thought of giving it up!  I am not an addict, I could give it up anytime, if I wanted.  I just don't want to yet.

Jeff, another great idea, I am getting tired of the post it notes I keep and the spiral notebook. I wil check it out. I have found that jott's transcribing hasn't been as good as early on but I think sometimes my cell reception messes it up.

Jeff~

Like you, I have been making my lists on-paper for decades... since grad school, at least...

I am very attached to my old ways. I am very, very attached to a system that seems to have worked for me. However...since it is YOU who has tested this new system ...and since it is YOU who's recommending it, and since possibly I can save time(??) by trying this JOTT out...I'm going to give it a GREEN Light and a try. I'll let y'all know how it works for me...

Sarah... I feel you. Trust me, this one was difficult. I've tried LOTS of other solutions. This one worked. That photo up there is the actual photo of my paper to-do list file. It now contains, near the back, printed out version from Vitalist!

Jeff:

I squirmed and wrinkled my face at the mere thought of giving up "my" legal pad to-do list system.  I have to admit that I haven't kept 20+ years worth of lists....... but I LOVE LISTS!!   UGH.....Another Tool Boy challenge.

I'll give it a look-see. :)

Thanks

All... this is an update. I went to  RememberTheMilk.com to check them out again, since I had not been in a while. What I found is that they have significantly improved the user experience. I tested it today as well and it works just as well as Vitalist now. So... you've got two to choose from. Each one has it's benefits. Vitalist has more power. Remember The Milk is simpler to use

Jeff, My yellow legal pad is never more than 12 inches from me. I cannot live with out it. In fact if I didn't have it in my hand I would walk tilted to one side. I do use jot quite frequently when I'm driving so may have to check out this new system as well. But you will have to pry my legal pad from my dead cold hands.:)

As I was reading your post Jeff, I could so identify with lapses of trying to computerize my To Do lists on Outlook, etc.  I have to say that there is a certain amount of power in putting pen to paper.  I don't know that I can give that up quite yet... :-)

very interesting jeff.

but, i'll stick with my notebook. if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

to me, there's something really unique about actually scribling on a piece of paper - the color of the ink, the style of handwriting, the size of the memo, the placement of the notes on a page. looking back at my notes, i can actually tell by my handwriting whether i was in a hurry that day or not and just by looking at the paper, i can visualize the moment i wrote my note or memo on that piece of paper. throughout this entire past year of blogging, i can't remember having a similar feeling. weird huh?

Teresa... I tried that. Didn't like it. Don't know what it is.

Rudy... that's what I like about this new method. It's the best of both worlds. I still print out the list and scribble on it all day. But I get the immediate benefits of forwarding emails and when I can't scribble, jott makes it possible to not forget to put it on the to-do list. I get the same tactile thrill from scribbling the note as well.

Shaine.. the idea was brilliant!

Marie... no, I started from where I was at with my yellow sheets.

Jessica...

These are the steps to send new actions to your Vitalist account with Jott:

  1. Sign up for a free Jott account.
  2. Sign up  for a free  Vitalist account.
  3. Add your Vitalist email address (username-pin@vitalist.com) as a contact in Jott. You do this in Jott by clicking on the Contacts Tab. I gave put Vita in the first name and List in the last and it works perfectly for me.
  4. Call Jott’s 1-800 number and leave a new action for your Vitalist contact. Speak clearly and slowly and you should get great results

It is that easy. The new to-do item should show up in your Vitalist inbox within a few minutes. You can then go into vita list later, when you're reviewing your to-do items and prioritize the things that were added via Jott or email. There is also a .mobi version of Vitalist.

Thanks Jeff:  I just signed up.  I gave up paper a while ago in favor of a small hand held tape recorder as my "capture tool" (from a time management class I took some time back).  I can't write and drive and so I like the 'no paper' idea.  I just misplaced my tape recorder so this sounded great - I will probably find my tape recorder now but excited about this new system.  You always have great posts - where do you find the time . . .

For those of you who just can't let go of the paper here's an alternate solution.  Electronic paper!  Use Microsoft OneNote on a TabletPC and all your handwritten notes are saved and SEARCHABLE!  They can be backed up, archived, printed out, forwarded to someone else, converted to PDF's, put on a website.  Just think of the possibilities. They can also be organized into "notebooks" for each listing.  Each notebook can have ALL the data imported into it so everything is in one place and descrete from all the other hundreds of pages of junk you collect throughout the day.  Items can be created in OneNote, scanned in, clipped from a web page, imported as a digital picture.  There's really no limit.  Dump the paper, save a tree! LOL

You can still hand write your notes, just do it on the Tablet.  I've been doing it for some time now and it works great.

Update:

There is also a "new" OneNote Toy!  It's called "One Note SideNote".  A little icon sits in the system tray (by the clock) Click it and up pops a little note field to write in.  It sends the note to a special folder in OneNote where you can then drag it to where it's needed.

Dana, - This is the One One that comes with Office 2007, right?  Thanks for providing another avenue for organizing my thoughts!  I wondered what that icon was for.

Jeff- I registered and finally got JOTT and Vitalist working together.  Gotta input stuff now.  What a great tool! We are being charged for the 800 calls, right?  Any idea what that amounts to on a per minute or per 6 second basis?  Whatever the cost is, it is worth it to have organized thoughts.

Marie - Yes, that's the one.  There are lots of "toys" for OneNote.  Clipping tool is handy, Send to OneNote from IE and Outlook add-on for the right click menu to name a few.

I've found the easiest way to create notebooks is via Windows Explorer.  (hit the windows key and "E" for a speed key shortcut)  Dig down to "My Notebook" under My Documents.  Highlight the My Notbook folder, go to the File menu, select "New>folder and name it.  Create as many new folders as you need and they will show up in OneNote next time you open it.
