Chicago is beginning to be known for its high taxes.  Already, the Cook County General Sales Tax hits City of Chicago Residents the hardest - with a 10.25% tax on general merchandise, the highest such Sales Tax in the U.S.

Heck, the City of Chicago even adds special taxes to a bottle of water, and it's Parking Meter Rates quadrupled this year!

As reported in the August 31st edition of the Chicago Tribune by William Lee, most candy - items without flour - and the majority of carbonated beverages sold in grocery stores will be taxed at the high general sales tax rate of 10.25%.  Before the increase, these food items were taxed at the lower state sales tax on food - in Chicago, 2.25%!

Is this tax move a money grab, or just concern for its residents good health?

A number of municipalities and states nationwide are upping the tax levy on what they consider "junk foods."  Many are concerned that childhood obesity is on the rise, and sugary pop and candy can only make the problem more severe!

But are city and state officials concerned about mass obesity?  Or just looking to squeeze a few more bucks from the populous, during tough economic times?

We savvy Chicagoans think we know the answer to that one!  Likely . . . so do YOU!

Just a revenue builder....I just checked on a municipality of ours that has code compliance...in order to sell you have to pay $175 fee, get the inspector out to see if there are any code violations, and if so, you have to pull permits, correct them with a licensed contractor, and pay any fines if you were the one who did it wrong!  I knew the certificate was good for a year...thinkiing that my seller just bought it within the year to rehab, he could fall under the certificate when he purchased BUT NO.....It is good for a year, but only for that ONE seller...if it sells again within the year, they have to go through the process AGAIN!  RIPOFF!!!!

A little late to tax junk food when all of us are already fat.  Now we are just going to be poor too.  Great we will be poor and fat at the same time.  How the heck are we going to sell that on eHarmony?  LOL.

I had always heard Illinois had high taxes, but then I saw a report that said you all have one of the lowest property tax rates.  Is that true?  Don't feel bad about food either.  All food in MO is taxed at the general rate as far as I know.
