Next Tuesday, Sept 8,2009 our President Obama is planning on addressing the school children of our nation in their classrooms.  This has become a very controversial event.  I am unsure why but I haven't researched the event.

Last night was the Parents Meet the Teacher event at our local middle school.  The event for next week was addressed during the event, the school board stated,  "We only have a few limited hours with your child each day and we have much to teach, therefore we have opted out of the Presidential address".

To me that seems like a very reasonable way to avoid controversy and keep politics out of the middle school.  I agree that is a wise move, people are free to think what they want, middle school is not the place to drag in right and left politics.  Teach the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Pledge of Allegiance to America.

I say HOORAY to Dripping Springs ISD for taking the lead in school is for teaching .. it is no wonder this district has multiple Exemplary Rated schools.

Good morning Gail,

I too feel like it is a reasonable way to avoid controversy and to keep the politics out of school. Considering the economy and the demanding situations confronting the President I'm unclear why  he has chosen to spend his time making appearances. It would seem with all he has to concentrate on addressing our children through public speaking on TV should not be at the top of his agenda! (or should it be to CHANGE the direction of our country)!

Gail, It may be a very innocent speech to the children of America but for some reason the people are falling out of love with this President's dream for the United States. I think it is prudent of a school district not to be caught up in a controversy when the ABC's are waiting to be learned...
Thanks for making this contribution!

Dorie, thanks for stopping in today, I thought it was very thoughtful of the school to make this decision.

Paul, yes, the school acted responsiblity to me, their job is to teach the ABCs not the brawl that has become our political arena. Thanks for your input.

Hi Gail,

What some school districts are doing is adding the President's address as a link on the school or school district web site where parents and students can watch together outside of school hours.

By the way, I really enjoyed being in your city last week for the Keller Williams Mega Agent Seminar.  I must admit I wasn't used to the heat!!!!  It has been very cool where we live in West Lafayette, Indiana-we haven't even had a day in the upper 80's!!!

Have a great holiday weekend!

Gail,

Thanks for bringing this issue up.  I have heard many parents plan to keep their children home if the speech is giong to be broadcast.

To me even if a President who I totally disagreed with wanted to come to my kids school I would have to say the experience would be too great to pass up. Teaching about the Constitution is great. Seeing it live and in front of you in the form of the highest office of the land is an experience not to be missed. Sorry Gail I have to disagree with you on this. Not because of the President , but beccause of the opportunity it presnets for the kids.

It wasn't the air time, I objected to, it was the questions that were the follow up and the writing of papers afterwards. To have the President speak to our kids, didn't bother me, the political agenda did.

If it wasn't political, why did they change it.

Seems like a national speech by the President of the United States, arguably the most powerful man in the world, would be a very teachable moment in our schools.

I think the fact that the school disctrict voted against it will have every schoolchild there glued to the Internet and Youtube for a week after the speech. Children won't be denied; surely a school district knows that -- LOL.
