DEVELOP A FAMILY DISASTER/EMERGENCY PLAN

By
Real Estate Agent with COLDWELL BANKER RESIDENTIAL BROKERAGE

Disasters and/or emergencies can strike anyone and anywhere so we should try to be as prepared for one as possible.  Like "insurance" we hope never to have to use it but we know that it is a good thing to have one in place just in case.  Here are some basic steps that you might want to follow:

  • keep a 2-week supply of bottled water and ready-to-eat food on hand
  • stock up on batteries - you may need them to power your flashlights and radios
  • make sure you have a sufficient supply of your prescription drugs and other health supplies on hand
  • talk with family members about a meeting place should you become separated

I'd like to add a few more to that:

Have some cash on hand for gas, food etc. If you have no power, the Visas won't be operative.

In fire riddled California, many areas need to be ready to evacuate on short notice. Make a list of necessities so when you're in the panic mode you have a game plan.

Lynn, I agree with your additions.

We have become a "charge it" society so the cash suggestion is a good one as well as the "list".  I would add that the list should be posted somewhere (not tucked in a drawer where you have to try to remember where you put it) so that it can be reviewed and updated periodically.
